Last night and tonights fun activities involved rescue of the PAS cooler pipe which runs infront of the front lower crossmember.
Originally these would have been supplied with a light treatment of a greenish zinc spray by the look of it, yet after 13 years of been in direct line of road spray, salt, rubbish and rain water, they corrode like buggery.
Mine were dreadful, covered in rust, some really heavy in places, so instead of just binning and replacing (new ones are about £35 + vat), i attacked mine with the wire wheel in the grinder. Took about 2 hours of fun, as these are awkward bas**rds to work on, real awkward shapes.
My trusted rust removal friend...
Now this certainly left the surface rust free like so...
As you can see some minor imperfections where the rusts been eating away at it.
I gave the pipes a good 2 coats of Bilt Hamber Hydrate 80, then 2 coats of etch primer.
Now even through the etch primer you could see the pitting left in the surface so ive done the lower section with this stuff.
Ive used this stuff for years as its only very very slightly textured, so it covers minor blemishes up.
As its left this evening - have to wait 12 hours for the stone chip to harden fully, then i'll do the other upper surfaces then coat the whole pipes in satin black.
