Was chatting to a guy at work about my wire locating problem, when another guy walked past and overheard. One of those guys who's always go loads of weird shit. "Ah, what you need is a Fluke!". Eh? "I've got one in my car, I'll go and get it".
Well yes basically it's exactly what I needed. Attach a cable at one end which puts a signal down a wire and a probe that detects the electromagnetic field the other end and you know which wire is which. Sounds pretty spot on to me.
Except it didn't work. No idea why, whatever.
Instead, went about splicing into the main ignition feed. I didn't have any massive cable, but as the return from the ignition switch splits into two anyway I just ran two bits of 17A cable; that'll be more than enough, I've got barely any electrics to run any more other than the ECU.
First up, get the little resistor. In case anyone ever needs a replacement, it's an 11W 3.3Ω jobby.
EDIT: Wtf? Why can't this godforsaken forum display an Ohm symbol? Jeez, it's not 1995.
Both ends attached to wires to give a bit more choice on the location; spade on one end for the switch and a ring on the other to be earthed.
With that sorted, I made up and ran my little four-wire loom for the ignition, and stuck that behind the dash.
Under the ignition, you're looking for the double pole connector with orange & yellow on the key side, and white and a yellow & blue twin on the other. The white is the feed to the switch, so is probably the better choice to cut into. However I wanted to take advantage of the two wires, so I cut into the return. Make sure they're properly soldered and heatshrunk to minimise the chances of them coming undone...
And job done. Double-check against the diagram, and give it a go. Works a treat - engine cuts instantly, no drama, no issues restarting. Brucey.
Took the car for a bit of a hoon after that, seeing as it's quite late. Got it up to temperature, oil cooler kicked in and doesn't seem to be p*ssing oil out, which is a bonus. Still over-cools on roads, but that's to be expected.
The brakes are still weird (which is kinda to be expected, as I haven't changed them...) but do give the impression they'll be awesome once they're done. It seems to pull slightly to one side under really heavy braking, whether that's down to the imbalance due to air in the calipers, or one of the rear calipers sticking I don't know. I did have to free up one of the rears when I changed the discs, so maybe it's just siezed again.
Possibly time to get them off and do a proper refurb job on them, oh joy. Maybe some other day eh?
