Well my new pins & rattle clips arrived and they are indeed the correct ones, which means I can assemble them all up nicely. I also got a white Toblerone on the way back from France. Just waiting on the rotors now...

not relating to Owain's splendid project, but stemming from his blatant racism and hatred towards anything not white, i actually emailed the council asking if it was possible to repaint my black general waste bin half-white as to promote racial equality. amongst a few other queries. let's see what they say about this or how they tackle it

Laugh my ass off

Brakes look flovely mate Thumbs up

Was looking at magnesium 607 Brembo's yesterday, was going to give them a shot til I realised they needed brackets from a C2 rally car to mount them, prices started spiralling very quickly, especially when I haven't arranged a subframe yet Doh

I think i'll just keep painting bits. Might stop me from spending money I don't have.

PS if you want any info re removing the ABS drop me a cheeky email and i'll send pics and stuffs Smile

Yeah if I were you I'd concentrate on having a subframe rather than having magnesium brakes. That's where my priorities would be.

Going to try and get the required parts offered up today, where did you get yours from Chris?

Just as <ahem>the last time the forum was down</ahem>, I found myself with lots of free time on my hands now I wasn't being spammed by updates from Chris painting and breaking his car.

Annoyingly, it keeps raining and my garage isn't big enough to work on a car. Quick trip for an Argos special offer, and you've basically got yourself a Kwik-Fit.

I had a pile of bits in the garage I'd been buying up for nearly a year now and hadn't had a chance to fit, so with a long weekend booked off I got on it. First up was my shiny new lower strut brace. Old wishbone bolts out, try not to drop the silly washers. The passenger side is fine, plenty of clearance. The driver's side is a bit more tricky, as there's a sump in the way. This is generally considered a right faff, and I spent a while experimenting with different attachments until I found the *perfect* tool, designed completely for the job.

Behold - the basic, "buy-em-everywhere" Clarke wheel brace.

It genuinely is perfectly angled for the job, couldn't believe my luck. Phil should buy shares in these.

And on it goes, nice and shiny ready to be ruined:

Next was the Spoox top mounts I'd bought ages ago, along with the new tops for my coilovers which are required. First up, off with the old and give them a quick scrub.

Old tops off with a bang as you can't get my spring compressors onto the KWs. The purple rings are the new parts I had to get from KW.

Having read someone else's thread about fitting these top mounts to KWs in the past, I was dreading the next bit. Now whether they've changed design or not I have no idea, but this was really easy. The current tops are only held on my friction, so tap with a hammer and they're off.

Next bit was a heart-sinker. It would appear the holes machined into the tops are the wrong size. Bugger.

Then whilst doing some kind of weird movement trying to compress the spring with your gut whilst doing up the top screw, realise it's only held on by about three turns, which seems a bit odd.

I then remembered something in the other thread about a spacer, and low and behold whether it looks like it or not, what appears to be part of the shaft is actually a threadlocked spacer. Have that away.

The hole in the new tops is now the perfect size, and the shaft now attaches perfectly. Spot on.

As the fear-mongers will repeatedly point out, these top mounts can only be attached by two bolts, which is true to a degree. However, all it takes is a Dremel and a penny washer, and they can actually be attached by all three. I shall later go on to drill a fourth hole to be on the safe side, but I don't have photos of that at the moment.

That'll do for now, looking forward to those falling off at some point.

Next up - the oil cooler I've had sat in the shed for months. Not really been looking forward to this one. First up, bumper off:

Now I always assumed I had two fans - fortunately it appears I have only one. There's still no obvious place for the cooler to go, but I can handle being inventivedestructive. While I was at it, time for the fog lights to come out. That's nearly a kilo saved there, that is.

No idea what this plug does. Hope it's not important.

Unfortunately there's a big pipe for "cooling" of the power steering fluid, and it's right in my way. Shame it's there really, as I've never heard of anyone having problems with overheating power steering fluid. If only it had some kind of accident involving a hacksaw.

Damn shame.

Right, the best place seems to be in the bottom-left, to maximise the airflow into it. Annoyingly, the company who'd sent me my new cutting discs for the Dremel had sent the wrong mandrels, so this was a manual job. Fortunately it's French plastic, so a stiff fart would probably be enough to reshape it. HACK.

Also removed the plastic stuff from the bumper, as it was in the way.

As for the power steering, I went for cutting the end off the loop, and cleaning up the ends like so:

This'll now do nicely for just looping the pipe by the reservoir. I'll get some hose clips on this shortly.

After a bit of head-scratching and plotting, I came up with an ingenious solution involving a metal strip and some threaded rod. The metal strip was bent as necessary, then self-tappered to the chassis:

I then attached both ends of the cooler with threaded rod - the LHS going through both cooler brackets then the new shelf bracket arrangement, the RHS going through holes in the bottom and top of the fan cowling. For now they're normal nuts so I can adjust it quickly and make sure it all fits, I'll put nylocs on when it's done.

The thermostatic plate just fits in place of the current filter and attaches by the zinc-plated jobby on the left here.

The note in the box says very clearly not to over-tighten the pipes - 30nm MAXIMUM. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN. The pipes have a sticker telling you not to overtighten them. Then, on top of the cooler, there's a sticker - DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN. I got the impression they did not want you to over-tighten the connections.

It was a bit tricky to get the pipes attached once the sandwich plate was on, so really should've done them first. Still, luckily all still fits and goes on with no problems. Do not over-tighten.

By this point, it was the end of my weekend. I'll post another update when I get home and get the photos off my camera.

Peace out, A-Town.

If you wind the spring platforms down to the bottom of the shocks means you don't need spring compressors Wink saves damage to the damper rod threads as the last thread takes a hammering when the nut lets go and fires off the rod. (Thats assuming your collars aren't seized like they usually are)

Great progress though, jealous.

P.S. Don't over tighten those pipes! LOL

Yeah thought about that, but couldn't find a hex key small enough to loosen off the grub screw, so didn't bother. TBH they're not under massive load, maybe compressed by an inch or so - nothing like the amount the standard springs are.

Was good to make some progress, although the missus didn't quite see it that way. Which was fair, I did spend the entire four days under a car.

So, how much did you overtighten the pipes by?

I've overheated PAS fluid, there you go, now you've heard of someone.
