Did a quick check of the engine bay, turned the ignition off and once the engine is off there is a metallic grinding/rubbing sound that slows down and stops, coming from somewhere around the block (I think in the right hand section but can't be sure). It lasts for about 2 and a half to 3 seconds.

I don't think it makes the noise when idling or accelerating, only when the iginition is turned off.

Any ideas what it could be!? Any help appreciated!!

Cheers mate. You can be useful when you're not hijacking threads regarding gearbox oil Razz

Are any of the above expensive/a pain to repair?

How serious could any of the above be?

first thing I'd do is take the aux belt off and fire it up, should eliminate or pinpoint what area its coming from.

Just been outside to have another listen and it appears to be doing it when the engine is running too, although the sound isn't very noticeable, only when the engine is off and whatever is grinding slows down.

I have a similar noise from my engine, It sounds like its coming from the inlet manifold; its like a dry bearing/metallic noise, or a whooshing dry air sound. From looking around on here I found a mention of a a 'characteristic whirring sound from the intake manifold'...but I didn't know if this characteristic of the '6 in general, or characteristic of a fooked engine!

Forgot about this thread. If by 'characteristic sound' you mean normal then yes it is LOL

I've listened to three seperate 6 engines and they all make the same noise from the inlet. It was just me not noticing it before, hearing it then freaking out Doh

That's exactly what I did, I noticed the noise for the first time after having the car for a year. I then panicked that I had a problem, glad to hear its 'normal', thanks for the advice

The car I'm going to buy this weekend has, what I am sure is, this problem. Anyone else recognise it? Sounds like it's coming from th e inlet manifold

Yes, they all seem to make this noise - it's a characteristic of the way the inlet manifold is shaped I believe and generally sounds like a marble rolling around inside.

Nothing to worry about. Smile

Could be the clutch release bearing, does the noise change if the clutch pedal is pressed when you turn it off?

When you have the car in your possession and if the noise does concern you, make a good quality sound recording (a video file on your phone) for a useful length of time and showing differing speeds/loads on the engine. Upload the file to this or another thread and then people can help. Worded descriptions of noises are extremely unreliable whereas the microphone does not lie.

This is my car.
It is like a ball bearing rolling around and more noticeable when it turns off and runs down

That would be the ball bearing I put in your intake.
