also got my 6 on the road on saturday afternoon. lasted 30 miles befor the timing belt slipped and bent the valves, at 1st i thought it was the bottom end so i went up to scotland to get a block from chrisd306, got it home and stripped the engine to find out it was the head Sad

looks just not on my side with this 6.

Did you use a tension guage to set the belt?

Facom do a tensioner for about £60 its a dear tool to only use once in a blue moon, but probbly worth it in the long run. I bought one for my rebuild. I'll see if I can get some details on it tomorrow if you are interested?

Here you go mate, this is the one I went for Smile

Easy as pie to use, you measure the thickness of the belt with the belt guage included, the grooves in the guage are numbered and correspond to the round pads on the left side of the kit.
You put the pad on the plunger part of the guage and the belt in the saddle, the plunger has two lines on the shaft, when the belt is tensioned correctly the appropriate line will be just visible.
The only problem I found is it's a bit difficult to get the guage in place with the engine in the car. You may have an easier time if you do this with the engine out before you install it.

Something similat on Egay.

Not a clicky:

Are you brave enough to risk the head again?
get rid of what you warped around the manifold,
it's just preserve the heat near the head eventually
wrapping it.
as for the timing belt tension gauges, i'v got this answer from someone in aussiefrogs forum years ago, he was right

"I've got a bit of news for you mate (good or bad depending on your situation); a couple of years ago I spoke to a few guys in the UK regarding this magic Seem tool; between them they looked around the dealers & specialists over in the UK and discovered some interesting facts. Most dealers didn't have one, those that did had broken it and not bothered fixing it, most of those that had it didn't know how to use it and those that did, used it but then "readjusted" by hand because it didn't read the setting correctly and usually left the belt too loose based on general good workshop practice. In a lot of cases, depending on the model of car being serviced, it couldn't be used in-situ due to lack of space.
In other words, it can be a handy safeguard if the engine is out of the car but otherwise it's either useless or simply not used. In Australia, I know of one repairer who was considering buying one because he also didn't know of any others in the Country.
When we eventually got hold of the genuine Citroen service bulletins on this job, it seems that the secret is more a case of the systamatic order that things are done and this includes a few "trade secrets" such as the direction the tensioners are turned to adjust the tension and the order in which they are done.
First step (as per Citroen's own guide) is "set tensioner 1 to its maximum position; this should read 21 Seems, but this may be impossible to achieve" (or words to that effect) which begs the question, if they set a figure and then admit it may be unobtainable, what value is the Seems tool?
"

i'd just followed the instructions on haynes book, and it never failed.
even in here (Israel) at the central garage (owned by PSA importer and the biggest in the Middle EAST no mech uses this tool)

I don't think so, why not get a local garage to tension it once you have fitted it? Might mean getting a tow there but at least you will know it's done correctly.
