Hi,

Got a problem with my car. Went to drive it today and it has absolutely no power and sounds a bit like a diesel. What could the issue be?

I replaced the spark plugs about 200 miles ago and it's been driving absolutely fine ever since. Except for today.

Seems to be idling a tad roughly, but isn't stalling. Also when I took a look in the engine bay I got a very strong smell of petrol.

Check the wirring plugs on your coil packs and injectors one of the plugs worked loose on mine a few years ago because the little metal clips that hold them in place went missing

I would check a spark plug hasn't come loose.

Yea sounds like not all cylinders are firing hence the fuel smell
Check sparks and coils etc

I've noticed one of my clips on the coil missing; Anyone got a spare?

Just checked and everything seems tight. I started pulling the plug for each coil pack individually to see if it made a difference, and the only one that didn't make a change of sound was the cylinder on the far right (when looking dead on). Not sure which number this is, 4 or 1!

Could this be a dodgy coil pack or something?

Was wondering if it could be head gasket related? Oil looks fine, could these be air bubbles in the coolant? (just looks like dust to me)

Coolant should be clear, right? This looks opaque.

And the white stuff just above the coolant looks like sludge from the picture.

I made a new one from 1mm welding wire take out one you have and copy it. Its not difficult to do and if you have patience you will make it look like to orginal

I'm hoping that's just the camera flash, but I'll check again when I get home from work. I really hope it's not the head gasket!

So I've double checked - that's not sludge there's nothing on the sides, just seems to be an odd reflection. The coolant does look pretty low and has a slight sheen on it. Could this be an indication of HG issues?

Is there anything else that it could be?

I've unplugged the coil for the misfiring cylinder and switched it with another working cylinder. This other cylinder then stopped changing the engine noise when the coil was unplugged which makes me think its that specific coil that's having issues. I'm unsure how to be certain it's an ignition coil though? I have a multimeter but unsure what to do.

Isn’t it so that the engine can run lumpy when coolant level is low and the sensors cannot get a proper reading?

Just topped it up and its still lumpy. Possible sensor issue then?

Unfortunately not, but I have one coming in the post that I bought for £15, so hopefully that'll sort it. If it doesn't, next stop will be the injector I think.

Thanks mate, appreciate it.

New coil turned up however, and it seems to have fixed the issue! Back to 4 cylinders.

Fingers crossed that was the problem. I'll keep an eye on the coolant and that potential oily sheen that it has.
