Looks, Paul, can be deceiving...!!
The car looks clean but in reality, it's pretty filthy and has been stood for some considerable time. Under a pine tree. It's covered in orange sap and tar.
Truth is, she's an old lady. Whilst it managed the 160 mile drive home (once we'd sorted the injector that sh
it itself just as I was leaving.....he'd already had issues previously and had got 4 replacements from Ryan in Thetford, which the 3 left he'd included in the sale....quick swap and all sorted), the mileage is evident in a number of places.
The front end is wobbly and wayward. Despite a new OS shocker, its tired and it wanders a little. The clutch is on its last legs, fair bit of vibration when pulling off. At 145k and no belt history at all, it's definitely due one. Same for the beam at that age and mileage, it's going to need some love, although there is no camber and it moves well. The brakes aren't great, a result of it being stood. Fronts are ok, but pads/discs shot, whereas the rear discs, despite covering that distance, looked like they did when we left. Both front seats are worn, the drivers seat is absolutely done on the bolster (usually Xsara stuff to be honest unless it's got a Ph2.5 interior) and each front seat had two cheap seat.covers on them. The driver's side frame is also broken, as is I suspect the seat runner mount in the sill (again, very very common Xsara stuff).
Despite all that, the engine is very smooth and quiet and returned 41.8 mpg on the run home, which was busy with holiday traffic and not the greatest. The gearbox is equally as smooth. They show no sign of age. It's other redeeming factor is its absolutely standard. Not a modification to be seen, anywhere.
Its definitely a breaker though. It needs too much money throwing at it to keep it on the road and with its mileage, it's just not worth it. I'm getting a slating from certain Xsara corners of Facebook for breaking another VTS but I couldn't give two sh
its to be honest. No-one will step up and offer me twice the sale price, which is where I'm at with the bits people have committed to, and ive loads left to go yet. That number doesn't include the rear beam either, which im planning on keeping for my Rallye (so I've got a Ph1 rack and Xsara spec rear beam)
I don't think I posted here either but I've just finished breaking a silver VTR which I picked up for £100. That shell gets collected tomorrow and then the Xsara gets driven onto the drive and stripping can commence.
