Hi all,

Had a couple of advisories on my MOT (car is a 1998 GTI6):
  • Offside Front slight play in o/s/f suspenion
  • front wish bone bushes perished

  • I’m assuming these are both to do with the wishbone and associated bushes and ball joints? Thinking of just replacing the full wishbones and getting some new ball joints, for both sides. Don’t think the wishbones have ever been replaced.

    Looking at service box, these are the part numbers:
  • Left wishbone - 3520 H4
  • Right wishbone - 3520 E4
  • Ball joints - 3640 48 (18mm diam)

  • How would these replacement parts be? (haven’t spoken to Pug about direct OEM replacements - i think my budget is slightly less than that). They're Febi Bilstein parts. Heard Lemforder parts are okay, would they be better?

    For £5 more I'd go for the TRW option. They come with a ball joint and were the OE supplier allegedly. I'm using these on my Rallye.

    Cheers mate, that's interesting - those wishbones say they have a balljoint with a diameter of 18mm which looks right, however they don't have the same OEM product number - when putting in the correct product number the TRW wishbones have a 16mm ball joint.

    Also, they look like they have riveted ball joints - whats the general opinion on those? Worth getting nut and bolt ball joints, or a all-in-one-ey like those TRW wishbones?

    The TRW one I bought from Autodoc had a bolted on ball joint not riveted. The part numbers don't match but all of the wishbones, for power steering models anyway, across the range are the same despite the numerous part numbers.

    Yeah, I think they all come under the 'ZF' parts umbrella that includes TRW, Lemforder and Sachs/Boge. There's a good app, for Android, called ZF PARTS FINDER. You can enter your vin and find parts from ZF.

    Thats right. I always use their webcat: https://webcat.zf.com/
    If there is a part like top mounts available under more than one of their brand, I assume they are made on the same production line so I just buy what's available for less money. My strut top mounts are from Sachs btw.

    My wishbones are Lemförder and as far as I remember they did not come with the ball joints. I had to buy them seperately and they came with bolts and nuts in the package. Thats better anyway because some need 18 mm ball joints and others 16 mm ones. Besides it saves you drilling out the rivets in a later repair.

    I'm having some severe issues getting the bolts for the p bushes on these wishbones back into place. I've compared my new wishbones to the old ones and they're the exact same. Does anyone have any tips for me?!

    Remove the drive shaft from the hub. I had the same issue. Make sure you do not pull the drive shaft out of the gearbox!

    Ah got it. Is that so I would have more room to angle the wishbone up?

    Sorry complete beginner at all this. What are the general steps to remove the driveshadt from the hub?

    If you're on cyclones fit your spare to the axle you want to remove the shaft from.
    With the car on the ground, remove the 'R' clip and nut cover/retainer from the nut.
    With a 35mm socket remove the nut. You may need to apply some extra leverage via a long pole.
    Get the car back up and on stands.
    With the wishbone bolts undone you should be able to pull everything (hub, wishbone, shock) off of the shaft.
    You may need to tap the end of the shaft through the hub to get it to move initially.

    I'd then look at removing the wishbone from the hub by separating the ball-joint from the hub.
    Re-insert the wishbone in to the sub-frame and do up the bolts that attach the wishbone to the sub-frame.
    Re-insert the driveshaft into the hub and put the nut on just one turn.
    Re-insert the ball joint in to the nub and tighten that.
    Tighten the hub nut and re-install the nut cover/retainer & the 'R' clip.

    Having a bit more luck with this.

    How far do the ball joints need to go into the hub? Having difficulty.



    That's where I'm at, at the moment. Do they need to go in the entire way, or just a certain amount?

    They help prevent heat from the brakes speeding up deterioration of rubber and grease in the BJ's. Might mean you'll be replacing the BJ's a bit sooner but probably not so you'd notice. They're only £5 from the dealer though.

    You need to remove the bolt from the hub for the ball joint to pop in. The bolt goes through the groove.

    So I've got everything on now, thanks for all the help guys. Although I'm still having an issues with the smaller bolt on the rear Bush, even with the car back on wheels and driven around a bit the hole still won't line up properly. Any ideas?

    This is for the nearside wishbone. The offside worked fine after a bit of bouncing the suspension to settle it.

    Had the same. What we did: first put in the small bolt, then put a jack under the hub. When the P-bush is leveled horizontally, screw in the larger bolt.

    Seems the small bolt is for lining up the P-bush.
