I'm experiencing some nasty front end shake on my 6 every time i'm hitting 80mph and above. It seems to be in an intermittent pattern, so a short window where it backs off a touch then comes back in again. The shake is centred on the dash more than the steering wheel, but there seems to be play on either side of the wheel at those speeds if I've got one hand on it. At lower speeds there isn't a problem, even on hard acceleration.

Wheels have been balanced, tracked all the rest of it but doesn't make any difference. Curious thing is, whenever someone who is of fairly significant weight sits in the passenger seat it's not as severe. This has been a problem ever since I got the car and it's doing my head in, nothing on the recent MOT showed anything wrong with track rod ends etc. Wheel bearings are also fine.

Could the wheels be buckled/warped? Are the shocks or suspension in general knackered? Any help would be hugely appreciated.

Not heard any so far, I'll be on the motorway later so I'll have a listen out. Don't suppose the MOT would identify any issues with the driveshaft either?

they don't for driver comfort but it will make the car shake if theyre miles out

Where does the shaking come from? Via the steering wheel or almost through your arse on the seat?

If it's the latter, it's deffo rear wheels.

All need balancing rear doesnt need tracking unless you have refitted the rear beam out of alignment

It's more from the steering wheel and the dash, but I don't think the rear wheels are balanced.

All need balancing rear doesnt need tracking unless you have refitted the rear beam out of alignment


The place I got them balanced & tracked at told me they couldn't track the rear as it's a torsion bar Dunno but the print out showed that the rear is slightly out of alignment but nothing major

not in the conventional sense you cant, but as Adam has said you can move the beam about a fair bit if you slacken all the bolts.

whats the data you got for the rear?

I always balance all four wheels. It removes one more potential source of vibration. When I got the Rallye 6 years ago I had issues getting Cyclones balanced, but reduced the issue by carefully cleaning hub and wheel mating faces - a lot of grease put on there by PO to stop wheels welding themselves to hubs. Grease build-up on mating surfaces can cause an issue. It also didn't help that one of my wheels was not true.

I got rid of the wheel balance issue entirely by changing to C5 steelies.

Check all front wishbone bolts for tightness - I have had this issue in the past.

I'd be thinking about a new rear beam too....

Suggests the rear passenger side is worn....

not so much worn but a bit bent, that's less camber than it should have not more, also same on the front, would imagine its been twatted against a kerb/roundabout or something.

This was my thinking. While we're on the subject of the rear beam, how much would I be looking at for a rebuild? I've been seeing a lot of stuff floating around about fitting larger bars than what's already on there? Something about bigger arb as well? Whatever that is! I'm not that well versed in stuff like this! The car is only used on the road.

around the 300 mark depending on condition of your unit, mounts would be on top of that.

I dont have arb's but I do have a set of adamb's spare 21mm bars.

Thanks for all the advice, nice to get some clarification on the matter. Where can I obtain bars, arb etc are they available new or will it be 2nd hand? What's the benefit of fitting larger bars? And should I go for solid mounts?
