i think its a phase 2 and a halfish and onwards thing...
im pretty sure peugeot fitted what was to hand with certain parts....i.e. using leftover/older stock etc.
my phase 1 gti6 never did it.
my phase 1 1.4 xl never did it
my phase 2 gti6 didnt do it.
i currently have a 99/2000 XSI that does do it
and a 97/98 gti6 that does it also.
again, pretty sure this is not an issue.....and more likely a stop gap fix from peugeot for other fueling problems the 306 suffered from.
it is to keep the fuel lines full and primed at all times, as well as the tank swirl pot full....
i imagine this is to prevent them emptying and drying out over time. reducing fuel residue build-up on key components like the fuel pressure regulator.
example of what might happen if it doesn't happen:
my current gti6 had been sitting for 10ish years in a scrap yard,
the non e10 compatible fuel lines on the fuel rail had corroded internally.
im thinking this had blocked/stuck shut the non return valve on the return fuel line to the swirl pot.
meaning my return fuel line was essentially blocked (and bone dry)....
resulting in maximum fuel pressure delivered to my injectors....(bad)
my fuel pump running at max pressure constantly and no fuel circulation so it got hot, eventually killing the fuel pump (bad)
unblocking the return fuel line fixed a lot of other random issues i was having.
so the fuel pump priming randomly isnt reallllly a problem, more a quirk.
only downside is it could drain your battery if you leave the car sat for an extended period of time.
