The race car has decided it doesn't want to leak engine oil any more, now it wants to leak gearbox oil! Pain in the arse.

I've been using the same gearbox since I bought the car with no issues thus far including the last race at Snetterton. 2 weeks ago I fired the car up in the workshop and ran it for about 20 minutes before turning it off, didn't drive it anywhere. I went to move it this weekend and noticed there was a nice pool of oil underneath. I parked it up at another part of the workshop and left it overnight to find more oil underneath.

It seems to be dripping from the bottom of the casing where the end cover sits and also the set of split in the unit mid way down (that you would undo to take the box apart). I'm not sure what would cause it to randomly start leaking? It has been a bit tricky to get in to 1st recently but I just put that down to the Satchshift not quite being adjusted properly.

it wont be the satchshift causing issues unless its binding on something.

issue with 1st will be worn synchro or wrong oil, sometimes a weak or broken synchro spring.

as for the leak, has it ever been apart?

I use Fuchs Pro S (I think that's what it's called) and it gets changed every 3 races along with the engine oil. Haven't had an issue before the winter so I wondered if I had just misaligned the Satchshift slightly so it doesn't quite hit 1st properly, every other gear is ok. Not really a problem, don't use 1st apart from the start so haven't looked in to it yet.

The only thing I've done is change the end cover as the level plug on the previous one had a ruined thread so wouldn't seal up or undo and was leaking. I did that in 2014 and haven't had any issues since then. Other than that, I've never taken it apart.

Dan I had a problem at Combe only going into first ...when I first had my Satchel shift & it was the main Allen bolt ontop of the post that had come loose & the two flimsy support flat plates moved upwards & that then bent them both slightly ...we then used lock tight on it & when I came back ..I changed the 1.0mm flat support brackets into 2.0mm Stainless & it's smooth as ever going into 1st now ...used lock tight again also ...hope that helps ...PS have a look down & see if your brackets are bent ?

As for the leak Dan ?....is the gearbox oil 100% 75-80 m8 ?
I used full syn castrol oil on my last box NOT 75-80 & after 6 months the box became notchy & bloody weeping all over the place Thumbs down
Since then was advised to use bloody expensive 75-80 Redline MTL oil which is great for plate Diffs also & had no leaks t ...so I've used it on my new box ...

Is this the one you used ?

They are exactly what I've been using for the last 3 years, no idea why it's started now. Gearbox has always been smooth, never had an issues with shifting (apart from the 1st gear issues mentioned).

Could just be a seal, hopefully not the casing cracked!

only seals are on the input and diff, the rest is metal to metal joints where rtv is used

Hopefully it's a seal and nothing else. Can the diff seals be changed with the box in the car?

also an o-ring seal around the speedo drive housing
3 bolts remove it once the long shaft is removed

I don't use the speedo drive, do you know if someone makes a blanking plate for it? Can make one myself if needed

There's a factory blanking plate on later cars as they used the abs wheel speed sensors instead

the housing o-ring i refer to is the housing that applys end loading to the diff bearings Wink

but yes there is also a smaller o-ring in the speedo section you are not using

I had a proper look over the weekend and it doesn't seem to be leaking from the diff seals. I've taken some more photos below:

Difficult to see but bottom of the casing has a coating of oil:







Driveshaft has a bit near the gaiter:



This seems to be the culprit. This is looking up between the strut brace and subframe, you can see the oil pooled on the bottom of the casing:

steam clean it off and look again its hard to trace leaks when everything is covered in oil

may just be coming out the breather and running everywhere

Breather is a good idea. I've done nothing different with the gearbox the entire time I've had it so no idea why it's started to leak now.

Probably going to pull the box out and have a proper look. I haven't got a huge amount of time before the next race so might make sense to put the spare box in. I'd like to put a 5 speed with shorter FD but not going to have time to get that ready, will have to put that in later on.

Not that, the oil is coming from further toward the out of the car than the crank seal thankfully, changed that once already!

Fairly certain although can't remember completely. The box has done about 300 miles since an oil change with no leaks thus far, can the seals fail randomly?

If it's leaking from where the 2 parts of the box sandwich together then as WP says it's only gap filler sealant that's in there. But might be worth just tweaking the 11mm bolts up. I took the K&N off the rallye last week to swap over the throttle body and the moment I undid the 11mm casing bolt that the K&N bracket was bolted through there was a slight oil weep from between the 2 sections of the box there. Soon as I did the 11mm back up tight it stopped wearing and hasn't come back since.

I'd start with a set of diff seals though and remove the speedo housing and put some RTV sealant round the o ring that sandwiches in between that and the diff housing. 3 places ruled out then without having to take the box out or apart.
