hello i have fitted a set of bp270 cams but now have a a light tapping noise the cams are dialled in correctly i have found a invoice to say the head has been skimmed before i bought it so i think i have piston to valve contact would it be best to pocket the pistons or get a thicker head gasket/

Sounds like you need to measure the head to be sure how much has been taken off it...

does anyone know if i would be able to retard the cams to give enough clearance and what effect that would have on power

i fitted them i am mechanic and was very careful not to make piston and valve contact at tdc i could only move the inlet cam 5 degrees each way before it touch the pistons iv had them check by a good friend who owns a engineering company and they are spot on the inlet was 110 atdc and exhaust 110 btdc

I mean when you put them in did you rotate either of them to get them to the correct position ? I usually put cams in and bolt down the carriers so that the cams are very near to the correct position then just move them slightly to get them timed ? The exhaust can usually slips forward so some people just rotate it all the way round again which bends valves

they dont pin up at tdc anyway, Valve to valve contact is more of a concern when fitting cams.

I think your missing the point here, if you've put the cams in and there's been valve to piston contact even minimal, you'll more than likely have bent valves. Also when fitting cams to these engines rotating either cam individually will likely cause valve to valve contact... And bend valves. In answer to your question yes cams can be fitted retarded however they'll likely achieve nowhere near there potential.

Exactly this...Yes

You have more than likely bent valves through valve "tangling" as opposed to valve to piston contact.
However, as Welshpug pointed out the cams do not get timed with any piston at TDC - the pistons are all at half stroke when you need to be timing them, in accordance with the crank pulley timing hole.

If the pulley isn't shagged and the outer bit hasn't slipped. Then the timing hole won't be in the right place.

If someone is competent enough to fit aftermarket cams, I'd hope they would know about lining the bottom end correctly.

You'd think so, but the number of engines from supposedly competent garages ive seen with tippex marks everywhere instead of using pins, and not pinnibg before starting, you wonder how they are still in business

True but he is asking about retarding the cam timing even though it's already tapping.

Yeah, this is true...
Seeing as the piston clearance is so small on these engines with standard cams, fitting higher lift cans without knowing the full history of head skimming etc is always going to be a risk.

the reason I'm asking about retarding cams is iv had engines that have slipped a tooth and sound like diesels put a new belt on timed back up and been fine and by retarding the cams slightly will move the power band further up the rev range and will give bigger valve clearance

These are not the kind of engines whereby you can slip a tooth on the belt and retime them and find they run perfect...No

And as Bowen says, 270's are mild, the issue has probably been caused by valve tangle due to 360 degree rotation of exhaust cam on fitting.

You still haven't answered the question - did you rotate the exhaust cam to line up the holes ??

i didn't line the holes up as the vernier pulleys don't have the holes in so i used a piston stop to find the true tdc and then set the inlet cam to 110 atdc and then put the exhaust cam routhlyin in the right place then carefully turned the engine to tdc and adjusted the exhaust cam so number 4 was rocking and then turned the engine to 110 btdc and set the exhaust came i then turned the engine over 10 times by hand and didn't fill no contact

That's not how I would of done it ! I'd of used the old pulleys to line up the cams then with the cam covers off I'd of used some mole grips to hold the cams in place then swapped the pulleys

ok i will give that ago when i say its tapping its fine on tick over but as you pick the reves up you can hear it if i didn't hear the engine before i fitted the cams i would say it a slightly sticky lifter. why i was thinking it might not of bent the valves is i bought a cosworth years ago that was very tappy and it turned out that someone timed it up on the wrong mark on the bottom pulley they drive it like that for a good 6 months before i bought it i fitted a new belt timed it up properly and was fine but i do under stand that the tolerances are a lot tighter on the gti6
