Hey guise,
I've imported one of these engine here in US and it took just about one year to get it. Just recently finished it and passed California emissions test with flying colors. However since first start up started to make a loud ticking noise what sounds like hydraulic valve lifter. I drove it for some time hopping it just neede air to bleed out of it which did not help. I ran cleaner in engine oil followed by oil change and ticking noise is still present.
This weekend I used my statoscope and ticking is coming from intake side cylinder number three. I removed intake camshaft to inspect oil passages hoping no debris got stuck when I removed covers and brackets for powder coating but everything looked good. I swapped lifters from cylinder number one too number three. No scoring or metal shavings anywhere, oil looks great,no metal flakes in oil filter and no blocked oil passages inside cylinder head. Compression test was good, engine sounds great, drivability is great with out any mistfires or backfires. This morning I had it running and ticking noise is still present on cylinder numer three.
Any ideas guys? Anyone ran in to this issue before?

Thanks in advance.

As BBB says, sounds like a tapper. Will need the head coming off and being checked

Thank you guise,I was hoping that wouldn't be the case but after all what I've gone trough with this engine to receive it I'm not surprised at all.
I got new head gasket set,new head bolts, new valve guides and steam seals for XU9J4 but I'm guessing it's not interchangeable?
Can someone confirm this?

Is the head gasket MLS (Multi-Layer Steel)?

Colin at Pugperformance. I got entire package from him and after I made payment in full everything went south after that...

I'm guessing some of the parts used are not compatible. The head gasket may be covering up oilways?

I end up ordering everything OEM for my parts supplier from Germany. Not what I wanted but I got shafted hard on this engine so might as well go to the end...

I wish I could go back and go with original plan...EVO VIII drive train...

As said, will be a bent valve or valve(s), head removal required.

have you given it a proper spanking? sometimes tappets can take a while to quieten down, and though rare I have seen tired ones cause a tap.

easy enough to diagnose, cam cover off and prod each tappet, none should be bouncy, though they will push down with firm pressure.

I've sent savo lots of parts already as the engine he bought arrived with damage so I'm guessing he's tried already to sort it with the seller.

I haven't as I'm afraid it may cause more damage. Out of curiosity I'll do leak down test this weekend.

If it wasn't for you I wouldn't be driving it at all :-)
I'm extremely happy with service you provide to your customers and lack of dishonesty.

I've tried working it out with Colin but no luck. No need to get all High School and name calling but I'm extremely dissatisfied with Colin's customer service and business owner.

Not exactly sure which party in UK haven't completed paper work correctly but entire package was setting at shipping company for months where I was told to get power of attorney to complete necessary paper work. After few months it finally arrived to USA but bill of landing was wrong (and few other things) at that point it was sized by US customs for further investigation...$1300 later and additional shipping fee I was told it needs to be picked up in Los Angeles with some reason, now I had to rent a truck and drive 6 hours each way. That was about $300 it self.
On my way back I stopped by my friends house (Pug nut) and noticed that engine was damaged and several items missing. I immediately filed claim with shipping company and contact Colin. I forward him necessary paper work so he can do he's part and that way shipping company would cover damaged items and he would profit again out of same deal. Unfortunately for me Colin has never came further and at that point 10 months have gone by,ar that point I took manner in my own hands and ordered damaged-missing items.
Funny thing is I had it running one year later just about to the date after payment have been completed at Pugperformance...

This has been extremely strange and bizarre experience for me and to the day no foul language have been use by my side in order to correct this matter to it's best...

Got to speak as I find, I have had loads of bits off Colin and everything has always been spot on!
Delivery is always quick and when Ive needed something in a rush he goes out of his way to meet up, or personally deliver stuff.
Never had a problem!

I have to say I've dealt with Colin since I bought my car back in 2001 and have never ever had any issues at all. Always been a pleasure to deal with and helpful, I'd suggest there is definately two sides to every story.
