Listen to it running. If it taps like a sewing machine, then it needs the head off to sort a bent valve. Listen also for any knocking sounds.

This is what I meant by noisey lifter sound. If it's a bent valve the rather obvious tapping noise won't dissappear. Sometimes 6's can have noisey injectors. This is pretty standard nowadays but is more of a less obvious ticking noise. 170k is not too much on a maintained gti6. Mine has 160k and runs better than engines with much less mileage and still produces 163 out its standard 167bhp.

Was tapping like a sewing machine and kept stalling. Not going for that one. Looked too shiny round the exhaust too. Axle looked ok I think, but I'm not sure how a bad one looks. Thanks again guys

If it was a loud rap then that was probably a bad one and walking away was the correct thing to do. Where's Horley? If it nearish kent I could meet up and you can view mine which is basically spot on. All Bar a noisey lifter at start up. So could point you in the right direction and explain the different noises that are okay and not okay.

That's way over priced, pretty undesirable colour wise too...

You should pick a decent GTi-6 up for that kind of cash if you hang around a bit

I've always liked Nile. Never did before I saw it in person, but cleaned up its actually a nice colour. Beats China IMO Smile

It's an odd one for me, I think it works on a phase three but on a phase two I'm just thinking D-Turbo Farmer

Horses for courses though, Blaze and Moonstone are my favourite colours on a 6 so in possibly a bad barometer LOL

    Anyone recognise this one?
    https://www.gumtree.com/p/peugeot/peugeot-306-gti6-low-milage-rebuilt-engine/1148430773

Seem expensive and quite far to travel just to look.
Don't suppose it's round the corner from anyone on here?
