dont want to go down the forged pistons and rods route yet , dont mind pocketing my pistons ,but will consider going wild cams when engine needs complete rebuild

I've got some Piper 285h, and a set of uprated (but not piper) springs, although to be honest I would run them with standard springs quite happily.

285s will need more than just pocketed pistons I thought?

1.85mm so quite marginal, certainly would be running a 1.4mm gasket.

Interesting, I thought you'd need more. How far can you safely go with pocketed pistons and a standard gasket? I've got 260s at the moment as they came up cheap when I was building the engine

Bridgecraft say +1mm on the valve cutouts, 1-1.5 mm is the safe clearance range, ive seen heavily skimmed heads touch with std piston at 1.4 mm.

so fat gasket, +1mm piston cutout and 1.85mm lift, might be ok as long as you dont sit at 7.5k+ for too long and get valve float from pumped up tappets

So I'm guessing the 1mm deep cut outs doesn't equate to another mm worth of lift clearance then? Been reading up on your other clearance thread very informative
