All,

Have been a few pics on here of some very nicely painted gearboxes (at least I think they are painted?? May be powder coated??) I'd like mine to get the same treatment when it comes out of the Rallye. Question is, how has everyone gone about the prep? Don't think its gonna do much good chucking it in the sand blaster....at least not if i want some internals left....

Case looks like it comes apart into two or three pieces. Is that a (relatively) simple job to disassemble? I suspect not. .

Any advice much appreciated.

Thanks

Not really a simple job splitting the box. I just sprayed mine with a load of degrease spray and brushed it with a paint brush. Then got the jet wash on it. Done this 2 or 3 times but make sure to block up the diff holes, i just stuck the shafts in mine then painted it with aluminium paint.

just clean it, yet to see one that actually looks good painted and lasts any length of time.

I think miles has powder coated one but obviously that would have been blasted and thoroughly cleaned out, I.e total strip down.

not particularly hard though, much quicker than engines to strip and reassemble.

you wouldn't actually need to strip it apart to get it vapour blasted though, just bung the breather and diff, same as jet washing.

On the ones I've painted I pretty much did the same as Chris.
I've attacked them with degreaser and various wire wheels, then I tend to just slap some hammerite on them.
I think I put a few photos of mine in my project thread somewhere. Smile

I painted one black once. Looked nice initially but then the battery leaked and it went scabby.

When I replaced it I just cleaned it down well and I'm much happier with it's original finish. Plus makes it easier to see any leaks.

Part of me thinks this is the best route to go down Yes

Is there anything that the box can be coated in, some sort of metal polish perhaps, that seals the metal and means cleaning off future gunk becomes a doddle?

I just did as above. Soaked it in gunk degreser and gave it a scrub, then jet washed it. Think i did it twice.
Then i just got some silver brake caliper paint i had kicking about and slapped it on. Looks ok tbh.

I think a std finish will be best.

Looking at getting it dry ice blasted. Looks like there are a couple of places near me. Failing that, I think I'll go with the vapour blasting.
