Picked up my 3rd gti 6 at the weekend, 200 miles home and was almost fine. Except the rev counter had a mind of its own, just sits at 6000rpm, then when driving comes off the clock! any ideas?

Problem no 2. Went out to it Sunday morning stated the car and idle was all over the place. Even once warm it was still doing the same. Same again this morning.

although the 2 problems were at different times i'm wondering if they could be linked, wondering if it could be throttle position sensor or idle control valve??

Just brought a rallye with the same issue although not quite so high with the revs replaced the icv mag marelli item (dont go cheap its not worth it )problem almost solved got to a point where it would not tick over at all or just revved at 3 K REVS quick clean of the map sensor and all is now smooth
am expecting to need a mew lambda also as its is a bit fuel ritch at the exhaust
it will most likely be one of these three
try carparts for less for icv saved £40 marelli type can be foun on the fleabay
O and reset ecu after if you can get faults cleared properly e.g by plugging it in is the best way

well just went out and had a play, blocked the ICV with my finger, cut straight out, done this twice, problem has 99% gone, so assume ICV is sticking, just ordered one so fingers crossed

Dont forget to clean inside and beware the screws they supply they may not fit properly and can chew up your thread

drove home from work and idle is still not quite right, but a lot better so waiting for the new ICV, the rev counter seems to work one min, then the next its at 10,000

no its not actually reving that high, it idles from roughly 1000rpm to 2500rpm, but the rev counter seems to think idle is at 6000rpm, and as soon as I move it goes to 10000rpm

Yup that's ph2.

Leave the icv in soak over night, normally helps.

Or get a new one.
