Hello folks

Can anyone give any advice for buying a car from Ireland please?

Just wondered if it is/was a lot of hassle getting car back over here, and would it need to be re-registered?

Cheers

I got the dimma from Ireland, it's still registered as being exported, I rang the dvla and explained it was going to be a long project and they said it's easy to re register it over here but to save the hassle of sorning it for a few years not to bother until it's ready!

All you have to do is get it mot'd fill in a form that I got from the post office, fill out the v5 if it has one and then send it all off to the dvla.

Clearly I haven't done it yet but sounded easy enough

Hmm? The car is tested, so thought about driving it back. But would it be easier for seller to drive over here, and I just pay a bit extra?

Andy, I looked at this a few years ago and as the car in question had been originally imported from the UK I would Have had to pay the import tax back, which was a small fortune, so dropped it Sad

Buying anything special?

Never did quite work out whether it was an official thing or whether he wanted his money back, either way, I didn't bother!

I think the above thing about paying import tax was a load of crap from the owner that wanted to sell it as you wouldn't pay them anyway I think it would be the inland revenue or customs

Me too, I'm sure theres no import tax within the eu.
Registering it in uk is piece of p**s and the main thing will be paying a company to fetch it over and hoping they don't damage it or just going over and fetching it back yourself.

Even less hassle when you don't have to do it as advised by the bloke from the dvla as technically it's not even in the country

No doubt if you did have to pay they would deny giving you that advice.

Dvla and hmrc are different companies though, but they didn't day anything about nova either, as the link explains it second hand cars would have already had the vat paid so no fee is applicable

When I was looking at moving to Ireland a couple of years ago I found out the import tax for a UK car was a ridiculous amount of money. I think it was something like 20-30% of the vehicle value. Whatever it was I remember my BMW would have cost £3500 to export it over there so I'm not sure what it would cost bringing a car into this country although I suspect a car over a certain age might be exempt.
