I see a few people on here have both. Id like to ask a few questions to owners and those that are in the know.

1. How do these handle compared to a well sorted Gti6? Keep up with them in the twisties? Just as satisfying as a Gti6 on a good punt down a country road?

2. What are your thoughts on the dashboard dials being obscured by the steering wheel? Not sat in one personally but had a nosey at one through the window at the dealers just now! I read a review on a car website recently and the journalist mentioned the issue and that he was 5ft 9 and could set it up comfortably so he could still see them. Is it only short people that have a problem because im 6ft 2 and stand a chance of peering over the steering wheel?

Any comments are appreciated because im considering one of these as a much newer alternative.

Thanks in advance,

Chris.

The new 208? I think the new breed of peugeots are better than the last. The new 308 looks fantastic imo, especially attractive in top trim with the big wheels and big 150bhp hdi. The new 208 is girly imo tho, but that doesn't mean it's unattractive. Performance wise I can't comment but a friend has a 207 gti and that's pretty quick...

207 GTi's are buttons, whereas a 208 GTi is overpriced IMO.

I don't think I'd bother trying to compare them as a modern equivielent. Lots of things have advanced since the days of the 306 to the point say a 2005 car would run rings around it.

I'd probably look at something a few years old for 208 money - and get more car for that money.

What I really dont like about newer cars is how all the manufacturers seem to be integrating the audio systems with so many features that are nothing to do with it making them impossible to swap. Like on the fiesta st where the hazard light switch is on the head unit fascia.

I dont see the logic in this because factory head units always have been and always will be a pile of poo. Why engineer out the ability to swap the head units over easily?

Where are my 3 6v preouts and decents dacs on these newer cars?

I see Peugeot are still installing extra crap speakers into their cars these days.

I'm toying with ideas really. It isn't the limit to my budget. The more sensible option. I've been sorely tempted by an M235i. A second hand S3 265bhp jobby. I really dunno what to do to be honest.

well I'm a similar height to you and for me, the driving position in the 208 is perfect. Can see the dials perfect!
M235i? That is a hairdressers car!.....although not as much as a 208 lol

My advice would be to buy something that doesn't depreciate quick so quickly as a new Peugeot.

I'm sure Captainash is busy writing a 208 GTi forum ready for when the 208 GTi is worth on average £4,000 in 2019.

The GT86 looks interesting, such a shame about the engine though. Not enough grunt.

    Bit harsh.

Unless you're balding - but then if you are, they haven't really got much to play with so you can't blame them.

I would love a GT86 however might be worth hanging out a bit as i think the facelift has the option of a more powerful engine Wink

I just read that cosworth are bringing out a supercharger package for the gt86/brz. ~£4k takes it to ~260bhp.
Think i read it on pistonheads earlier.

I destroyed a GT86 in a standard Rallye not so long ago, they really aren't that quick. Having said that, I do like the look of them.

That 208 of yours looks mean Carl! When are you selling the Rallye Whistle

Can't comment on the 208 GTI, but I had a 208 diesel hire car last week. I expected a bit of Peugeot magic but was disappointed. The steering was overly light, clearly electric and very dull-witted, with a dead spot around the straight ahead. I drove a twisty A road twice the same day, once in the daylight and once in the evening in the dark. In the dark it was not very confidence-inspiring, no feeling of front-end bite, and I had a Disco sitting on my tail until it overtook me. Overall it was OK but it was no better (and probably worse) than the Nissan Quashqai pseudo 4WD I had a few days later. The same road is dispatched with confidence and ease plus bags of feel and front-end grip in the Rallye.

The 208 ergonomics were OK and once the steering wheel was correctly adjusted the dials sitting above the wheel was no problem.

The GTI would have to be a night and day difference from the version I drove to be as good a drive as the Rallye. The Rallye might be uber-flimsy and made of Gauloise cigarette packet tinfoil, but it is still amazing to drive 15 years after I first drove a GTI6.

I also think the looks of the 208 are very contrived, especially the front. I certainly don't desire it. I remember thinking about a 306 "that is a good-looking car". That is not the case with a 208 0r 308.

I think a lot of people are disappointed with modern day cars claiming to be GTis or sporty versions because they expect it to be like GTis of old and in reality, a car could never ever be like a 205 gti or 306 rallye due to safety and all that jazz not to mention even if they could get away with it, people wouldn't buy it because people like us are a tiny minority. The majority want a nice easy car with a feather light steering wheel and not have a clue whats going on between the car and the road because a computer will do it all for them!
I think we need to start looking at newer cars with a pinch of salt. Yes 208gti is not like a 306gti BUT, what else in the same category that you could currently buy new is as good?
