The Fiesta ST gets a lot of love from journos, Wouldn't mind giving one of those a try.

I`ll never have another Hot Hatch though tbh.

I think we need to start looking at newer cars with a pinch of salt. Yes 208gti is not like a 306gti BUT, what else in the same category that you could currently buy new is as good?

I agree with you overall but our Mk2 Focus though not a current model is an exceptional drive, and it is not an ST - it is a slightly warmed over version. The current Fiesta gets good press too

Whats with all these manufacturers using fixed axle rear suspension as well. A chap at work has just bought a brand new fiesta st3 and I have a gander to find a fixed axle. No wonder it judders round corners on the track. Ive seen it on some very new golfs as well.

I think the 208 gti has had quite a few changes to differ it from base models. Heavier steering, smaller steering wheel, stiffer springs and dampers etc. I'll reserve full judgement until I drive it.

you mean the beam axle? been on golfs since the first one ever, c2 and 207 have had them too, 307 also.

packaging and price, lighter than a 306 beam.), they use the crossmember as an arb, so its semi independent rather than fully independent like a 306.

Agreed the torsion beam axle is primitive, but well-engineered it gives surprisingly good results. Most FWD hatches have used some variant on the theme.

Heavier steering does not necessarily equal more feel or a better drive. A lot of manufacturers make that mistake. A lot of people may well like the 208, but in comparison to a 2008 Focus and a 1999 306 I found it lacklustre and not very confidence-inspiring. On the strength of this (admittedly limited) sample, I'd say Ford chassis engineers are currently where Peugeot engineers were 15 years ago.

Interesting thread. I've often thought modern Pugs do nothing for me (having had 205XS, 309 GTI, 405 Mi-16 and now the 306), and it's a crying shame.

Round here (dodgy fen roads), ride quality is far more important than power. The pug is quicker than my Z4M a-b just because the Z rides uncomfortable harshly.

If manufacturers stopped listening to the stylists and went back to 15 or 16" wheels instead of 18s or even 19s, I'd be much more interested in a modern hatch.

Also very much like the look of the BRZ/GT86, although I'm yet to drive one. Sure, not much straight line poke, but having had the 'M, straight line speed quickly gets boring, never mind the risk of enforcement.

I just read that cosworth are bringing out a supercharger package for the gt86/brz. ~£4k takes it to ~260bhp.
Think i read it on pistonheads earlier.

Friend of mine has a gt86, he's paying some ridiculously high monthly instalments for the pleasure as well but he still
Lives at home and has no gf so I guess it's the thing to do. Anyway the driving position is fantastic, the car handles really well and genuinely fun to drive. All the switchgear feels high class (better than my Toyota!) and... Well tbh it is slow LOL so the option of a proper engine will fix the problem. If they do a factory turbo version this could be with modded jap coupe of choice in 10 years as their supras and mr2s will have well and truely fallen to bits by then!

I agree with the sentiment that most modern hot hatches aren't as engaging to drive. Hence why I'm back in a 306 after various 2007-newer models. They are all very fast yes with their turbos and they look good (although the focus IS huge) thanks to their shiney paint and huge, normally black now, wheels. But they just aren't much fun. My Toyota is a bad example but with the tuning box it's about 200bhp and its horrid to drive. No fun at all.

208gti is no modern 205gti which they keep saying it is.
It feels heavy, lumpy, numb and dumb.

No comparison to that Fiesta ST 'eco'boost either. That ford chassis is class leading.
I'd have one in a hearbeat if I could afford it!!

I think to be honest put any one in this car for a week and it's a great place to be, pin sharp, fast, comfortable etc, then put you back in your 306, technology has moved on and it really does show.

306 although a great car has aged and cars that are around now are a better, safer, and faster place to be.

This is what im looking forward to, to be back in a car with a bit of refinement. As fun as the gti6 is to drive, the rattles, vibrations and noise is becoming long in the tooth for me.

I'm partly to blame here because of all the motor sport bits I've put on it over the years. But the dashboard is f**ked now, moves about, shakes and rattles no matter how much I tighten it and prop it up under the centre console.

My criteria for a car has changed as I've got older as it has for many others im guessing. I want some creature comforts and refinement but I also appreciate very much what a Gti is designed for. Pace, comfort and driver appeal. Getting the right balance of performance and refinement is a hard act to follow and difficult to strike the right balance that will appeal to everyone. Inevitably it will either fall in to the 'too hard' or 'to soft' side.

Another thing that bugs me these days is the manufacturers are always making cars bigger and wider. One of the best things about the gti6 is its size. Not to wide. Theres been plenty of times over the years Ive been hammering about (I like to get a move on whenever I go anywhere) and Ive been on a country road, in town, all over the place really and had a scenario where ive had to guide the car through a small gap at the last minute and thought, christ, if i was driving my dads Saab 9-5 I would have been fubered there.

Liking the 208 gti and the fiesta st for that. Nice and compact for getting a move on down tight A and B roads.
