Ok, I've done
35nm
Then went round on
70nm

Now, for 160degrees do I just need a f**k-off extention bar?
Seemed pretty tight at 70...

Sorry to keep asking but I'm learning and don't like doing the same job twice.

Yeah you need a angle gauge. Got one over here if you want to come and borrow it.
I angled mine and had to use a 2ft breaker bar to do so. My first one i did i was worried i would snap the bas**rd but they won't! Just make sure you get the washers in there as well and makes life a tiny bit easier if you put a bit of grease on the washer.

Well it turns out its actually really difficult to turn the bar at all when you've put your back out. Doh.

Is it supposed to be unbelievable f**king tight even from the first few degrees?

I wouldn't have thought so. 70Nm is not a lot of torque.

Are you using new head bolts?

That. Chances are if you are using the old bolts, they are at or past their maximum stretch tolerance. NEED a good set of bolts!

When I did my HG I could only get about 90 degrees with a breaker bar before it wouldn't move any more. That was using new bolts.

I've got no idea how you're supposed to make it tighter. I was using a 1.3m breaker and couldn't get it to move any further!

sure you did 70 Nm and not 70 Lbft?

even I can manage the 160 degrees, and I'm a skinny bas**rd Razz

iirc the 8v goes to 300!

Did you put some oil on the back of the bolt heads? Something not right there if you can't tighten them, I did mine on an engine stand which is a dam sight harder than with the engine in the car....

Tbh I can't remember, it was a few months ago. Engine seems ok at the moment so I'll run it until I replace it or it dies!

I had no issues with tightening, but didn't realise until after that I should have had washers on. The bolts I removed didn't and the new bolts I bought didn't either

If you don't have the spacer under the one nearest the master cylinder you'll bang a hole in the back of the block!

I counted all the washers and they're all present and correct.
I'll take all the bolts out and try again then... When my back fixes itself.

Is it possible to hydraulic lock the bolts on these?

Definitely possible, I know someone who ripped the threads out by hydraulic locking it. He'd got oil in the bolt hole...
