Myself and a couple of mates are planning on doing the scumrun in 2016. Part of the criteria is the purchase of a sub £500 car so are there any recommendations as to what we should consider? I don't think the cosmetic condition is an issue so would be looking at reliability as the main factor.Edit: Also there could be four or five of us with camping gear so the size will be an issue too. ________________________________________ Less than 24 hours to go! |

dan it's too early to be buying anything now as we're doing the 2016 one. Just getting ideas at the moment and the 306 hdi is a really good shout. Other suggestions have been a Cavalier or a Defender. Orta, ease of repair I guess is a must, luckily one of the blokes who is possibly up for it is a mechanic  ________________________________________ Less than 24 hours to go! |

You'll never get a defender for £500 I sold a smashed up one recently for £1600, what about a Saab estate there quite cheap ________________________________________ Old pugs don't die they just get faster |

Yep. 2.9, V6, 24v......The old man's was quick. Not necessarily 0-60, but rolling it was proper quick. Floor it on the motorway, the back end would squat like a bear in the woods, the autobox would kick down several gears and launch it at the horizon at a rate of knots...... ________________________________________ Cherry Red Rallye .... Me and a couple of mates did the scum run in 2012, assume it's the same organisers, the main guy at Scum run was called Edd White. Anyway we used a Honda Accord Coupe V6 which was wrapped to look like The Striped Tomato out of Starsky and Hutch. What we found is that obviously not everybody sticks to the sub £500 purchase price for the cars they were using, there was a couple of guys using a BMW 750i which was blatantly worth a lot more than £500. So wouldn't get too hung up on getting a car that is sub £500 as no one actually checked what we paid for the car.  We also discovered a few guys that didn't camp, they just booked a hotel at the final destination once they had worked it out. Got to admit we also stayed a couple of nights in hotels especially when we had torrential rain on the first day and night so was soaking wet by the time we put the tent up! Anyway that may be more to do with the fact that haven't camped for over 20 years and now like our creature comforts like a bed and a shower! That year there was a guy on a pizza delivery 50cc moped who did it and the guys who 'won' it overall drove a 1.8 diesel Mondeo LX but they only stopped for fuel, which wasn't very often, as they cruised at 70mph and urinated into bottles to save any toilet breaks.  Anyway the only thing you really need is a decent sat nav with European maps on it that allows map coordinates to be inputted. Hope that this helps. |
