Hi Guys,

I now entering on 6th week with my GTI 6 at the mechanics!

I took it in 6 weeks ago, as it developed a ticking noise in the engine - they told me the lifters needed replacing. $2600 AUD later and the noise was still there!

6 weeks later and still no resolution - They are now telling me the cylinder head needs replacing, but I'm finding it hard to swallow and feel its more of a "lets squash this tomato with a sledge hammer!" approach (overkill), purely because they cant find the problem.

I have uploaded a video of the engine running with the noise, hoping someone can give some insight!

Also, its had the all 16 valves changed as of about 12 months ago and head machined.

Look forward to responses!

I think the GTi6 in Aus is the S16 over here, although I may be wrong?

The GTi6 over here is common for having tapping problems, searching for it will probably show loads of threads about it. Can't say I've heard of the S16 tapping though.

Have had the valves and hydrolic lifters replaced - would they have replaced the guides as well?

Also - what would need to checked in terms of the plugs?

Can't play the video. It isn't the injectors is it?

Thats a gti6 engine alright. Sounds very much like a "tapper". As welshpug has said, check the spark plugs are not loose as this sounds the same. If they are nice and tight then it needs the head looking at. Itll either have bent valves which were probably done when the head was rebuilt or timed up incorrectly, probably because of a slipped crank pulley or something or it didnt have the guides done at all/correctly.

It may be incorrect timing ... and that can lead to valve to valve knocks or valve to piston.

I'd be wondering about the garage. It sounds as though they don't know what they are doing and are trying random options at your expense. $2600 to replace lifters? Sounds a lot.

Ok...update

I have pulled the car from current mechanic.

Valves - checked and fine.
Guides - checked and fine.
spark plugs - tight.
Timing - checked and fine.

The noise is not present when cold, once car warms up ticking noise starts.
It also increases in frequency as revs increase.

Any other ideas?

It will be a bent valve (or more likely two of them).

I'm 100% sure on this. How does the mechanic know the valves are fine? Have they removed the head and spun each valve up in a drill? As that's the only way you'll know...

Even the you'll need a DTI to detect the bent valve, il bet the detectable runout is minimal too.
