You may have seen another thread of mine about my recent incident involving a cracked bumper...anyway...I'm looking for some advice about the best way to carry out as much preparation to a front bumper myself before taking it to a body shop for paint. I have a spare bumper so can happily work away at it off the car. It's the wrong colour for a start and has some minor scratches in it which will need attention. Apart from rubbing down the old paint with scotchbrite pads, what else can I do to save a bit of labour/money at the bodyshop?________________________________________ 1999 GTi-6 (china blue)1999 Rallye (black) |

Mask off the grille and if you're really keen, prime it. Will you be fitting it yourself too?________________________________________ '98 Nile Blue 306 GTi 6 |

Any good body shop will not let you do your own prep. Good paint work is all in the prep work and if you do it, they spray it and it looks s**t, to the general public it means they are useless at painting when in reality, it was probably your prep work. |

I take your point. Does this include rubbing down the old paint?...is there anything I can do to save them time and labour?...or all just a waste of time if it's not up to their standard________________________________________ 1999 GTi-6 (china blue)1999 Rallye (black) |

If I were you I'd go to a few places, get quotes 'all in' without you having to lift a finger and present the chosen one to the person who hit you.________________________________________ |

If the person that hit you is paying for it, why not just get it all done by professionals?________________________________________ 61k miles Ph.1 Diablo '6 Project Thread |

Just get it properly clean and free of grease and crap, leave the rest to the professionals. You might even end up causing them more work by doing it wrong. ________________________________________ Membership expiring soon, get in contact on our new little forum project. |

If I had a pound for every job I've had to correct, over the Years, where someone thought they could do it themselves after watching a video on you-tube, I'd have £54.70p. ________________________________________ For we are many.PS£ ID: Monkey369 |

Andy, is there anything useful I could do before getting my whole car resprayed? By that I mean remove the Rallye stickers, take windows out, remove trim pieces etc.?I've got a long term plan to give the road car a respray to bring it back to one colour as it's about 8 different ones at the moment. I was just curious to know what I can do to help the local bodyshop that's not involving prep. ________________________________________ Rallye Race Car |

trim removal and anything to get the painted area exposed. any window trim, pillar vinyl, etc. i'm going to be taking my 205 gti6 to the bodyshop soon. i've drawn around every single dent on it and imperfection so they know what needs looking at too, and i took all the windows and windscreen etc out, stripped the mirrors / arch trims etc etc all off so it's literally bare. masking stuff up (aside from the inside of the car) is a half arsed way of doing stuff and i HATE IT________________________________________ 306 rallye reproduction decals (full sets/individual decals) | 306 b-pillar textured vinyl weatherstrips306 slam panel esso stickers | 306 yellow / orange / pension fund red side door badges gti6 inlet manifold badges | 306 rear boot badges (p2/p3) winner of Extraction of toys from prams with outstanding vigour award 2009 [source: gti6 owners club] |

I'm happy to spend as much time as needed removing things to save them doing it. I have no skill in actual prep work so have no plans on even trying it!All I want is a blow over to try and bring the paint back to one colour and as standard looking as possible. ________________________________________ Rallye Race Car |

To be honest, I've never done a full re-spray, so I couldn't give any advice. Rikki seems to be in the know, though. I'd defonatley shop arous for prices, as well, as it seems to vary, wildy, from one place to re next. ________________________________________ For we are many.PS£ ID: Monkey369 |

hardly, i'm just doing what makes a better finish really (hopefully), i hate overspray on trim and stuff so if it's a bare shell it's gonna be easier surely and less time they spend pulling bits off!________________________________________ 306 rallye reproduction decals (full sets/individual decals) | 306 b-pillar textured vinyl weatherstrips306 slam panel esso stickers | 306 yellow / orange / pension fund red side door badges gti6 inlet manifold badges | 306 rear boot badges (p2/p3) winner of Extraction of toys from prams with outstanding vigour award 2009 [source: gti6 owners club] |

I don't really want to strip down to bare shell for the road car as the interior's in good condition and is very clean so no point taking that out if I can avoid it.Ultimately I want to get the exterior resprayed along with the engine bay and the underside. I'll talk to a few bodyshops and see what they say. Would rather pay a little more and get a good job. ________________________________________ Rallye Race Car |

and around 41.25% of 15-year old brittle plastic trim clips break when you grab the trim piece with both hands and wrench it free. ________________________________________ Cherry Rallye SOLD |
