I'd say probably TPS but that's still just a guess.

Have you checked the lambda sensor? That would send your fuel usage sky high if it's buggered.

Also, have you tested the coilpacks?

really appreciate all your help lads
stressed as hell
would the coil packs break down under full load?
any members in or near Bristol
I like fast cars, but fixing them is not something I am good at unfortunately
I will get a multimeter this week and start checking everything
but my preference is to change parts :-(
can't really drive it to a garage it's not driveable
and got worse
I could spend hundreds buying parts which is what I normally do and end up spending out when I didn't need to
contemplating lumping it to peugeot
I have had the same in the evo with coil packs but under heavy load
if I drive it hard or rev it it it clears until normal steady driving

There is low probability that you have failing coil. This engine have separate coil for each cylinder. You can try unplug/plug coils one by one and see which one will not make any difference (will not cause additional misfirings) - this is the failed one.

Not coil packs

Try unplugging the power steering sensor - front of the engine on the power steering line

No Smile. The high voltage is at the "bottom end" of the coil pack. You will unplug the upper white sockets - there the voltage is low.

It feeds a single to the ecu to up the revs when under load ie turning left or right - when it plays up it can cause odd running Yes

Have you checked everything is actually plugged in ?

There are a few spare plugs around that area, but check that the Inlet Air Temperature sensor is plugged in:

Definitely try someone else's TPS and CTS if you can. After you replace the CTS you can bleed just the thermostat housing by opening the bleed screw and blowing in the tube on the expansion tank. Coolant will come out the stat screw and you can shut it. Could probably get away with not doing that but might as well.

If the sensors in that picture are all plugged in then it is a spare. There are a a fair few kicking around just to confuse you. Laugh my ass off
My money's on the TPS.
