I was driving in Newcastle with my girlfriend on Saturday, in her Clio.

I approached a double set of lights and the traffic in front wasn't moving so I slow so as not to block the junction....

BOOM... van right up our arse.


My wrist is f**ked, I can barely move it. My back and shoulders are very painful, same with my girlfriend.


The Clio doesn't look bad, the bumper was knocked out of place but I managed to pull it back on and it doesn't appear to be damaged.... but will likely have broken fixings.


I'm gonna get the car on a ramp tomorrow after work to check the boot floor etc



Anything I should do? Is it worth calling my insurer before I inspect the car? I don't want to claim if it's okay?

The van was a council van, so we have a council claims line to call. Any idea's?

Do it all via the councils insurance ! Get 2 independent quotes for the damage and send them off to the councils insurance . Then start injurie claims

Get onto winn solicitors mate there based in byker in newcastle and tend to be pretty quick too and you dont need to go through your insurance as they will deal with the other persons insurance to claim all you are owed. Also make sure you get to the walk in centre and the doctors to get a medical report and a copy of any sick note if you need any for time off work.

Yes, if you get hit in the rear it is their fault and will be paid by their insurance, and your insurance company will claim back your excess from the other insurer. However, when you get insurance in the future, you will still have to answer "yes" to having made a claim, so you may pay higher premiums for the next 5 years as a result - despite the fact it was not your fault.

Normally i wouldn't say go and claim straight away as i don't agree with most of these whiplash type claims however i know my self how long a wrist injury can put you out of action and cause you a hell of a lot of pain for a long time so personally, id do as Eddy as suggested.

With regards to the car, ALWAYS let your insurer know asap wether you intend to claim or not. If they find out you haven't informed them (and they do have odd ways of finding these things out!), they will more than likely cancel your policy and if you have insurance cancelled, you will have a hard time getting insurance for years to come! Even though its not your fault, they want to know whats happened so they can determine who's at fault.

Thanks for the replies. I'm not after whiplash as I'm not suffering, but I am struggling to do anything with my wrist :/

Go for all you can I say then you have more money to put into your rallye LOL imagine it was you who would have went into them, bet they wouldn't think twice about claiming for all they can. Specially now how easy it is to claim for whiplash ect...

Insurance companies can be a pain, I had an accident last September and as of yet still haven't been paid out, had a courtesy car ever since and the cost per day is £63 billed to them.

They admitted liability just seems they don't value the car like I do, even with invoices etc, went court last week still waiting the verdict. I never went for the whiplash etc at the start but once I felt they were taking the p**s, I claimed for everything.just got to see what I get.

Hopefully yours will go all smooth, it's a nightmare if it doesn't.

Use your other hand to wipe your arse. I appreciate you can't get the same purchase, but if you use a damp sponge you should manage.

    I just can't do it! I'm left handed too... so I should be able to manage but I'm quite clearly right hand dominant.

    Recently broke both my wrists, I resorted to wrapping toilet roll around a coat hanger.... Unsure
