In other words: would an oil shock not be more close to OEM than the Bilstein B4?

This was my gut feeling after finding out recently that OE shocks are oil, and that those Monroe shocks are also oil. Many pattern parts seem to be gas; such as the B4, the Sachs monster truck version I have on the car, and the crusty old Boge unit I took off it. Maybe an oil replacement part is actually quite uncommon. Dunno

I did some measurements as well:

From bottom to "collar" (in other words the part that sits in the wheel huCool: 6cm
Base of drop-link attachment (the square piece of metal) to "collar": 8cm
Base of spring-seat until base of drop-link attachment: 11cm
Base of spring-seat to "collar": 19cm
Total length of shock absorber: 35cm

190mm from the spring seat to the hub locator tab/collar is relatively long compared with OE. What did you measure, B4s or Monroes?

I can check the KYB ones that I took of my convertible as well... just to see what those dimensions are... they look very much the same as the original GTI ones.

I checked the number engraved on the shocks: 32-810-0

This is BOGE. I was told these shocks were OEM...

nope, if they were oem they would say PEUGEOT on them, as peugeot made the original dampers...

very rare in the automotive industry, Sachs KYB and Bilstein are huge oem suppliers, but PSA have made their own dampers for decades (and exhausts, under ECIA)

they also make a large amount of interior plastics under the name FAURECIA, which you'll find stamped on the back of most VAG dashboard plastics, seats etc.

Peugeot is engraved on the shock as well. But maybe BOGE always engraves the brand the shocks are made for on the shocks.

Peugeot made their own - it's even stamped on the piston when you open them up - they were pretty good for the time, they even have hydraulic bumpstops built in, which is better than most aftermarket and even uprated damper options have.

If the Peugeot OE shocks are considered to be good, at what point is the crossover reached between an OE 20 year old, ~150k miles shock which is not leaking or knocking, and a new pattern part from a reputable OEM supplier such as Bilstein, Sachs etc.? i.e. given my ride height woes is it better to swap back to the used OE shocks if they're in decent condition?

As I am about to replace shocks on my phase 1 XSI with RFS engine and wheel hubs, I am looking for Bilstein B4 (want to stay close to OEM) and Eibach lowering springs, I was thinking about the following:

As the B4 are gas shocks, can it be that they “push” the car up where the OEM oil-shocks do not?

By the way: I fitted B4s to our 206 with Eibach 30mm lowering springs. The car sits just very slightly lower, but the bounce is much less then with OEM springs. A bit stiffer and more comfortable.

Just did some additional measurements now I have the B4s at home:

There is a difference of 5mm with the BOGE ones. I have put the ruler over the fixing of the droplink to measure. The distance between the base of the spring cup and the “collar” is 175mm for the B4, 180mm for the BOGE one. The distance between the fixing point for the droplink and the “collar” is the same for both. So, I would say the B4 should put the car 5mm lower.

Will assemble the front struts today so that I can fit them over the next weeks. Will be fitted to a phase 1 XSI with GTI engine.

Thanks for posting the measurement for the B4s, Joep. Post an update with how the car sits once they're fitted but it seems that the ride height will be fine based on what you've said.

I haven't gotten around to ordering replacement shock absorbers yet. The car passed its MOT with flying colours last week and I'll drive it around for a bit before changing the Sachs shocks to either Monroe or B4s in the future.

Okay. This is going to be a bit delayed. The B4s I bought from someone who still had them in his shed, were different in shape between left and right.

One was numbered 22-045959 VNE-4595 and had a black plastic cap on top.
The other was numbered VNE-4596 and had a brass cap on top.

The fixing for the droplink was way bigger on the VNE-4596. Furthermore, the distance between the spring cup and the collar was 5mm less for the VNE-4596 compared to the other.

Boxes were different in size as well...

Have the impression the VNE-4596 is an older version.

Not going to fit those as I want the shocks on both sides to be the same.

Sent them back and now ordered new ones from a car parts shop.

Update:

I received the new B4 struts and measured them. All measurements are the same as OEM. I have fitted Eibach lowering springs, so I am wondering how it all will work out...

Small update:

While changing the drive shaft, I replaced the struts as well. I noticed the old shock did not sit fully flush in the hub. Now, the B4 sits flush.

Car is still on stands as I need to replace the other strut still. But I am wondering if ride hight is the same with the B4s.

When holding the old strut next to the B4 assembled strut, they were exactly the same length...

Bilstein B4s plus Eibach 30mm lowering springs fitted:

Car sits higher than before. It is not like it is built for off road, bit definitely not lowered by 30mm.

I’ll see how it will be in a while. It is my “daily” 306 “GTI” so I don’t mind it is sitting a bit higher. I think it is now at the hight as how the cars leave the factory.

I've seen comments that the Eibachs don't drop as much as 30mm can't remember where,

as long as you are happy then that's all that matters, Put up a few pics so we can have a look if you wish,

I will upload some pictures this week. But I was just comparing old pictures with the pictures I took today, and the gap is not much bigger now. I think I am just to focused on the gap that I imagine it is bigger.

Update on this: car did drop a bit and is now back to the height it was before.

I just bought a B12 kit for my restored GTi6 (was on sale at Bilstein). This will be fitted over summer.

As I will also change the wishbones, I was wondering: should I go for OEM bushes? Or Powerflex?
