Cars run fine for some time but today on the way home from work my car has been acting rather strangely when setting off from a stand still. Whilst releasing the clutch and pressing the accelerator the car is very judder around the biting point and if holding on the biting point it feels as though the car is dying to jolt forward and I have to give it some extra revs to stop it juddering.

Once im driving its fine and gear changes are easy the issue only occurs when setting off. Or so I thought all was fine!

I turned my stereo off during the drive as I thought I heard a noise and it turns out there is a whirring each time I press my clutch - never noticed this before.

Any ideas/ suggestions?

Warped pressure plate by the sounds of it.

Common on 6's and its mostly caused by holding the car on the clutch at traffic lights and hills etc.

Put up with it or get the clutch changed, choice is yours. Smile

Cheers and Yeh makes sense got someone else to press the clutch whilst I was out of car and the sound is very noticeable from outside and you can also feel it when pressing the clutch.

Also cheers for the advise on the cause of it which makes sense as I always have my clutch held in when at lights.

Is it an issue that could lead to clutch failure or will it just be an annoyance? Just trying to gauge the priority of it?

The "whirring" sound will be the release bearing started to wear badly.

As for the judder, new clutch time. Yes

Will the release bearing be part of a new clutch kit? There's a valeo. On eurocarparts. At 130 with a further 15% off is that a good price?

Yes a clutch kit normally contains a release bearing but double check. My valeo one did.

Holding the car on the clutch will put lots of excess heat into it hence why they warp over time. It also wears down the friction plate reducing the life of it.

Try and hold the car on the foot or handbrake at all times to prevent this happening.

Oh and £130 is not a bad price tbh. Does not hurt to shop around though.

on the 306, the release bearing is part of the pressure plate so any kit will have the bearing a part of it.
Try your peugeot dealers. They offered a refurbed unit for about £100. Good thing is, most dealers don't return the old clutches so they never have any to refurb so just sell you a brand new one.

Any ideas from anybody how long a replacement would take to do yourself? The information on Bullseye says they estimate 6 hours and 20 minutes and I do not like the idea of paying a garage for that amount of time!

Ive seen there is a guide on here that looks quite simple to follow however it doesn't mention how long it takes given that myself nor those helping me have replaced a clutch on a 6 before (however do have experience of replacing clutches on their own cars a number of years back)...

Any time suggestions?

it's not a hard job at all, just lots of random bits to remove. i think 6 hours the first time you've ever done it, then about 2 hours from then on

Only hard part can be gettin the pin out on the clutch at the minute if it's seized in and when putting the box back in lining up the forks can be a pain particularly as the 6 box doesn't give youuch to look through to see the forks line up. All other 306 boxes have more holes round the bell housing you can see through.

And autodata gives 7.20 hours but it's really not that bad. Can do one in less than 4 hours inc changing flywheel, having a bloody good clean up inside the bell housing, replacing driveshaft seals and lever arm bushes etc without particularly rushing.

I wouldn't do it for £100 though lmao not for a clutch job....

Yes considering most places would quote 6-7 hours on book time. At my work it woul be 300-350 plus vat on top so £400ish labour. I'd be charging £200ish for a job like that so at 100 id bet he doesn't know what he's in for or doesn't mind working for peanuts lol.

Was that from Eurocarcare? I just got a clutch from them for my HDI for £39 delivered and got the last one!

    Kris B did my clutch in 4 hours, had the box of in no time before my eyes LOL

    Fitted my lightened flywheel and crank pulley whilst he was there. I supplied parts and he did it for £130 I think labour.

    That clutch is a bargain price, should have got two Yes

    Also its worth replacing the crank seals whilst there. And the fork bushes, makes the pedal nice and light Smile

    I was thinking of getting them both and either selling on or saving just in case but nah thought id give others the heads up and I believe Walker_Texasrange went and got the last one the next day haha.

    didnt get any crank seals but I got the bushes. The guys in the garage may have done the seals anyway. Hopefully picking the car up later today so will see what the difference is as my clutch has always been heavy - so many garages have commented on it before ha.

    so just collected my clutch back from the garage.... I have been told I am never allowed to take the car back there ever again! hahaha oops!

    but i must say... I dont like it :'( i've learnt to love my stiff clutch over the last 5 years and now its smooth and as light as a feather....

    Do not like it one bit! ha

    I got in touch with the parts bloke there but with the surcharge he wanted nearer £80 so I left it.
