Morning guys! Thought i'd help to bring a bit of life to the forum with a thread on track tyres....

So for the last 6 years I've always used Toyo R888's and once picked up a set of AO48's and since first buying R888's I've seen the prices double. It's now certainly hard to justify £120 a tyre, £480 for a set of R888's!!
Now I've always got on with them well and found them a touch more predictable than AO48's, there seems to now be a fair few road legal track day tyres well under £100 a tyre which isn't do bad. Who's used what, what's your opinion and how much were they.
I need to order a set of 4 track tyres in the next few weeks to fit my new rims.

Touring car spares do used slicks for 140 a set. Better grip than a track day tire and a third of the price. Means you can't drive to and from the circuit on them though.

Trouble is they have had the best out of them.
I did have a set of full slicks on spare rims but just sold them on. I hardly used them tbh and when I did it p**sed down. Im happy to stick with a road legal track tyre.

I've just bought 2 sets of Federal 595 RSRs to racing on next year. From what I've read the ultimate dry grip is not quite at the level of R888s but they're much better in wet / damp conditions and are substantially less expensive!

I managed to get all 8 tyres for under £600

Can be bought here for £56 a tyre! £224 for a set aint bad!

My brother is talking about getting a set of Toyo R1R's for road/track work. He hasn't yet so I can't be any more helpful than that I'm afraid, they sound interesting though. I *believe* its a similar rubber compound to the R888, cheaper though.

I went for 205/45/16s as I'm running 16" 1.2s for brake clearance.

The way I see it, at that price you can run more front camber and go through the tyres faster with less worry about it as they're so cheap! We're going out on track at the end of Feb so looking forward to seeing how they respond.

Fair enough. It does really depend on how the car is setup. The more devoleped the car is the less the tyre will make a difference to a degree.

For example, if you stick a set of R888's on a standard gti6 the difference between a road tyre and a R888 will be massive. Maybe 5 seconds a lap because the tyre shadows all the actual problems of a standard suspension car and provides grip required.

However something like the castle Combe saloon 106 race cars that have to run 1A tyres. Normally run the AD08's and the suspension as been very well developed on the peugeots in the series. You chuck a set of R888's on one and the laptimes won't really fall much.

I guess as an overall the R888 will be better dry than say an 1A tyre (AD08 or R1R) and the federal RSR would fit in between.

Agreed. Considering at this point I've only run T1Rs up front and Contisport Contact 3s at the rear, I think the RSRs will be a good step up!

We've got a fair amount of adjustability on the race car (adjustable dampers, camber etc.) so we should be able to get a good setup that works with the RSRs.

Interesting though as maybe the Federal is a better all around tyre. We don't always get dry track days so if the Federal is slightly better than a R888 in wet (makes sense looking at the tread pattern) but its the opposite in the dry. The federal is half the price and maybe last longer...

Tread doesn't look as cool as the R888 though haha

A lot of what I've read online seems to say that the RSRs are good in wet / damp conditions as people use them as their wet tyres when racing. Since I don't have the money right now to get a set of R888s for the dry I'm going to use the RSRs in both and probably get 1 set scrubbed for better dry grip.

Tread pattern is for pansies Razz

Silverstone slicks are around the same price as the r888s if that's any use Ash? I have a set of these and r888sThumbs up

Yeah I've had a look at them. If I'm going to buy a set of tyres at near on £500 I'll prob stick with the R888's.

Having experienced the RSR's in one word c**p, Braking was horrific compared to the Silverstones I run, Breaking was almost doubled to the extent I did brake early thankfully or I would have gone off the track. Couriering OK nothing great.
The sidewalls on the RSR's are very soft with the 195's on the C5 wheels looking flat to me even with 30psi in them to give you an idea, Thankfully I think he sold them and switched to the Silverstones on the same rim and gained a huge chunk of time.

As you can see I don't favor them at all

I remember you favour the silverstone. How have you found wet grip? And any idea on how they compact to a R888?

    A friend of mine (previously on knackered ao48s) was 2 seconds a lap slower on new rsr's last time he raced at coombe.

    Not too bad, Mind I have only used them in the wet once for a mere 40 seconds, Side walls are nice and solid more Slick based than anything else, I can get a good price on them too

    I'm going to give the RSRs a run and see how they do. Like I said, for me they'll be a step up from what I was running before and at the moment I don't have the cash to be able to afford R888s or equivalent. I'll try them next time I need to change tyres.

    Crap! There prices have changed. Last night when I stuck that link up they were £85 per tyre plus vat.
    Now £101 per tyre plus vat. Wish I had ordered them now!!

    Looking at reviews of the DZ03G on piston heads they seem to get awesome reviews. Made from a race carcass rather thane the R888 being a road carcass.
    Seem to have the opinion of harder sidewalls and don't 'go off' as easy so in theory should last longer.

    Think these are at the top of my list currently

    Same as the silverstones, I keep meaning to try the Dunlop's or the mega expensive Michelin's to see what they are like but re-shelling mine has put toll to that
