I've got a torque wrench, I haven't actually used it yet though!

Do I need to get the head skimmed and pressure tested?
I've heard differing opinions on this.

Head will definitely need skimming - pressure testing is up to you for your peace of mind. I would personally, but you don't have to. Smile

I would always get it skimmed and pressure tested!

You'll need to throw money at the car. Not on parts. Just stand near your car and throw loose change at it, I find this increases performance for a short period of time

Thank you for the advice guys. Still pricing things up and thinking about what I should do.

Thread revival.

A local mobile mechanic came over, I asked him to bring a sniff tester but he didn't for some unknown reason, he did, however, then proceed to look at my car for free and he says he has no idea what is going on.

If you rev the engine there is occasionally a bubbling sound. Also, with the rad cap off, as soon as the thermostat opens coolant bubbles out at very high pressure, going everywhere. The coolant is also quite low. There is also a white, steamy exhaust plume and water on the floor below the tailpipe, but not huge amounts of either like last time. The car is still difficult to start from cold.

The entire time he was there (30ish mins) it ran fine, got up to temperature, fans kicked in, then it cooled, and repeat. However, just after he left the revs dipped very low and it stalled a few times.

I'm really not sure what is going on?! CTS replaced, idling smoothly etc. ICV clean but not replaced, but this problem existed long before revs started dipping today. There is definitely something going on with the coolant system, and those bubbles can't be normal?

I could still get it sniff tested in the next few days (been mucked about by two mechanics now), but other than that I'm at a loss.

Anyone got any ideas? It really seems like a slight coolant loss into a cylinder to me but I just don't know.

Sounds to me like you have head gasket failure into one cylinder at least.... Not good but I fail to see what else this can be! No

Yeah that's what it's looking like sadly.
The massive bubbling can't really be anything else.

Thanks

Yep, that sounds like a major HG failure unfortunately. Yes
