I've got a spare engine that I'm going to be low boosting in the new year, but I'm bored and want to get the engine ready to stick in as soon as I get the charge kit. What is worth changing before I put it into the car? I'm changing the aux belt and cambelt along with all the associated pullies, replacing them with the solid ones that Rich_W makes. I'm also going to be changing the clutch and putting on a lightened flywheel.

I'm just wondering what else I should change whilst the thing is out. I'm thinking the big end oil seal (the ones that goes to the gearbox which always seem to go). Any other things that I should be looking at doing whilst it is out that isn't insanely expensive. I've heard that PTFE inlet and exhaust gaskets are a worthwhile investment but I'm not convinced. Anything else that I should get carried away and spend too much of my money on a 15 year old French car? LOL

I would say the cambelt/aux belt and associated parts which you're already doing.

PTFE inlet gasket is a good idea, as are the oil seals on both the timing and flywheel end. Yes

Lightened flywheel is also a VERY good investment. Thumbs up
Make sure you run heat range "7" plugs in it too. Yes

Is it the same to do the timing end as the flywheel end. I know that the flywheel is just sump off and then two bolts and the casing comes off and away with

The timing end is much easier.

Once you have the sump off, there is only 4 bolts and entire 'diamond' shaped part comes off and you can just replace the seal in the middle of the casing whilst it's in your hands. Smile

Good news, I'll hunt servicebox now to get the numbers and get them ordered up this week. Any advice on cleaning the block down, I'm stripping it cleaning and possibly painting it before it goes back in. I'm thinking red or something else that is not the colour of oil so I can see any oil leaks.

I'm going to be tracking it so it's not for looks, just maintenance

If your bored do as many seals and gaskets as possible and also the core plugs.

Core plugs? I've not heard of anyone bothering to change them before. What is the point?

Core plugs are generally only really changed if you are rebuilding an engine from scratch etc.

You can change the camshaft seals whilst you're doing the belt.

Yeah, I've only seen them changed when they pop them out to chemically clean the engine. Another easy job then doing those seals? Is it a case of rocker cover off and then a similar thing to the crankshaft seals or is it just removing the cam pulleys?

Remove the cam pulleys, then you can easily change the seals. Yes

Flying here. Are all the GTi6 engines the same then (I've got servicebox set to my VIN but it's a different engine going in) seals wise. Or all parts for that matter. I assume they are but you know what they say about assuming...

For the price of a set of core plugs, you may as well change them. So many people leave these out and with the age of these engines now you may as well just pop in some new ones.


Strip and rebuild the hydraulic followers as well if you're likely to have the time. Dead easy to do and they can end up in more or less new condition once you're done. Happy followers = quiet engine. Thumbs up

Hmmmm. That does look like something that isn't too hard. I'm debating doing these cores, especially if they are cheap and easy to change. Even if it's just for piece of mind. Are they orderable (is that a word) as a pack from Pug or are they all seperate numbers. (Do you have the servicebox numbers?)

I was thinking core plugs if your bored and have time to do them, why not. If they've rotted a bit on the inside it may be a good shout.

About the PTFE inlet gasket, it might be that due to its thickness of these the inlet plenum will come to sit higher and not giving enough clearance to the bonnet.
That's what i have been told anyway

I have a PTFE inlet gasket on mine, being sandwiched by two standard gaskets and it's fine. Yes

Well at the moment I can't even find one anywhere. You remember where you had yours from Stan or was it a group buy thing.
