To be honest I've found these dsg gearbox to be good in the few things I've been in (one of which was a golf). I'd echo the comment It's a shame they don't upshift a touch quicker but they've obviously made them as smooth as possible.

I can't see the issue with downshifting, they allow you to change down but leave it too long and it'll do it for you. I don't think you would be driving properly if you wanted it any different imo and should look at the way you drive and not criticise the gearbox if you have problems with them tbh.

Would I swap a charged 6 for one? Definitly

I agree but why is someone swapping a far easier to sell vehicle that is worth more money for something less desirable? that's all I'm worried about fordy knows his way round a gti6 but if someone is wrong with the golf then he could be kicked into touch by repair bills! Makes it very difficult for a comeback on a swap!

I would go for it. Just make sure the DSG has been looked after, they need regular oil changes and your best off getting it all reset as it learns your driving style too so it will have taken to the previous owners driving style. A mate of mine bought one a little while back and it was very sluggish in 1st and 2nd then 3rd and 4th wernt very smooth either but after a reset and service he loved it Thumbs up

We had a 55 plate gti with dsg box. Paid 7k for it and had it for 6 months and it was nothing but trouble

50k on the clock, turbo actuator was broken, engine mount snapped dropping the engine through the rad, major issues with engine management light. Other than that the car was a dream to drive

I can fully understand Stans point, manual should mean manual. You can argue that its doing it in case the driver forgets to downshift but how many years have people had proper manual cars now? And how many times have you forgot to change down approaching roundabouts? Vw need to trust people more and stop nannying them.

Not much of a VW fan these days (never actually owned one) but I would say realistically it's worth it! After all you can't comparea '6 to a 2005 Golf GTi when it comes to reliability/build quality and as Dan said resale value.

To be fair, I drove a mates standard Mk V gti manual for a few days back in 2009. I thought it was a fantastic car. Extremely fun and great road holding ability. I think you'll be happy Thumbs up

That said, this all took place prior to ever owning a 6 LOL
