Hi guys. I use my 70000 mile Gti6 (Phase 1) mainly for weekend fun and trackdays. It has been stripped bare and there's not much more weight to lose. It has stiff suspension, uprated brakes, is lowered and has a full cage.

Assuming it is producing 165bhp now, with a completely standard engine, what is the cheapest way to achieve at least 200bhp?

TB's ? Turbo ? Supercharger ? Other ?

Ideally I'd like to spend £1000 or less, and would be happy with used parts (Why?), but will consider more for the right results.

Whatever I do needs to be reliable.

I appreciate all helpful replies.

bhp is not cheap.

its between a diy V6 conversion, and fitting cams and throttle bodies, both will be over a grand quite easily, nearer £1500+

Gotta be v6 as even 2nd hand bodies/ecu go for £1000+ and that without cams and mapping

You'll need to throw money at the car. Not on parts. Just stand near your car and throw loose change at it, I find this increases performance for a short period of time

If you'd of asked this same question 3-4 years ago everyone would of told you to fit a set of pt82s and a remap for 200bhp. Funny how things change isn't it?????? Razz

So, if the 3.0 V6 route provides the most power and torque over the widest range AND its the cheapest option for 200bhp+, that looks favorite to me (Great noise too!).

Has anyone done a "306Gti6 V6 conversion" video/blog or list ?

Really appreciate your replies so far, would love to know whats involved in detail.

Why is this though? Are people just more realistic now or just more people doing it etc??

Jammapic has just proved over 200 is possible, his mapping session will have cost £400, maybe more, not sure what his Jenvey bodies cost him. PT81/2's and remap will be around the grand mark, however you will need to have your pistons pocketed (£110) to safely use these plus any other bits that are needed

I'd have to agree here, its a tried and proven route to instant performance.

If that's not to your liking however, V6 would be my choice, but from looking at most of the forums threads it would seem bodies will give you less hassle in the long run.

V6 is torquey bit imo it's got a lazy power delivery. Much better to stick with 16V and tune it. Cams, pocketed pistons - may as well replace big end shells and pistons rings while your at it along with head set and new cam belt plus the all important remap will be ~1300 all assuming you can strip and rebuild it yourself, if not then labour cost's are going add at least £300 to that

Yeah saw that but pretty much everyone on here including the tuners always argue that's not possible normally saying bodies alone are good for around 180-185 and 185-190 with the longer inlet.. Or that's pretty much the info I could find when searching, but I suppose that's the good old rolling road result debate coming into play etc, but that said isn't the general assumption on here that chip wizards are considered good/accurate having done the super charged maps etc

Again not my thoughts just from research on here lol

everyone's entitled to their own opinion but for me i would prefer the higher revving GTi6 and its nicely stacked gearbox for fast road duties. Not for a minute suggesting the V6 is a slouch but i personally think the XU RS is the way to go

i was thinking the same, it would be interesting to see his results if he dyno'd his car on a different set of rollers, not that i'm doubting his figures. You would swear that his car already had cams fitted for it to see 205bhp

I'd put the 1k towards other things than trying to achieve 200bhp. Diff, tyres, suspension depending on whats been done so far but solid beam mounts, rear arb etc.

The engine I bought off here made 210bhp & 167torque on 264 Newman cams and jenvey's.
But still not a cheap option.

If money is tight look into a good pair of used 45 side draught carbs, cams and dizzy adapter. Will be a lot cheaper to setup on the rollers and get similar results providing you fit parts in a good condition. The advance curve might not be perfect but should be fine for max power. A few good books are available on dizzys and carbs

Please dont ever spoil a nimble hot hatch by putting a v6 in the front of it!

Im old school sorry.

If you want to spend money then fine, but please dont put a v6 in it.

Added lightness is the way, not added heaviness .
