Im old school sorry.

If you want to spend money then fine, but please dont put a v6 in it.

Added lightness is the way, not added heaviness .

Wave You must be new here.

The V6 has an alloy block. Not especially heavier than the iron J4RS engine, Besides the V6 is well balanced so it doesn't really matter.

The 406 V6 engine in the 306 is a good combo. Passenger up in, or drive one if you ever get the chance.

Its is still heavier though and the weight is less well placed within the engine bay.
Plus you would need a big oil cooler for track as they run hot.

Only swap worth doing imo is an ew10 one.
20kg or so lighter and easy gains with a decent exhaust and some tbs.

If I've still got mine when your down this way I'll take you out and see if I can change your mind on that.

You are right with the temps but nothing an oil cooler wouldn't fix. I'm sure the weight could easily be dialed out with the right suspension. Mines all standard and other than it does nose dive under breaking it still handles great and imo is no less chuckable than a 6, just more of a handfull doing it.

So if I can locate a tuned V6 lump with throttle bodies and a trick ECU it would be worth the effort?
My 306 already has very stiff (adjustable coilover) suspension and weighs under 1100kg.
To achieve 200bhp/tonne I need 220bhp. Hmmm.....

I'm currently on 195bhp per tonne and done my first trackday last week ... And had a standard engined 306 with only a cage, suspension and braking mods fly by me. So on that note I'd definitely concentrate on handling and braking first before spending alot of money on chasing bhp

Your best bet is to get a stage 2 conversion, I heard they are crazy fast

If you were going to use aftermarket management you can fit the later v6 engine which IIRC is about 210 bhp standard. There seem to be more performance parts for that engine, cams.

With the right setup personally I think you could make a very good track car especially with the later lump. The coupe forum is good for info.

Keep a 4 pot lump. It just makes a better track car.

I would agree with this personally, but it's each to their own I guess.

Use to love the power delivery in my old v6, never had no problem getting its speed up and as for cornering i never had any issues with it. The engine does sit a lot lower to the ground tho. i found that out the hard way when i bottomed out on a B road with standard suspension so had to lift the engine a little and fit coilovers. i would have another v6 any day but would have to be a one thats been done properly as i had a lot of clutch problems with mine but then that all depends on the setup too.

I too would say stick with the 6 lump. 1100Kg's?! You need to get stripping some more bud! You can loose another 50kg's easy. Get some sticky tyres, decent coilovers, light bucket seats, fiberglass bonnet, oil cooler, braided brake pipes with .5 fluid and see how she goes Thumbs up

Hi my choice would be to save the money and wait until you can go supercharged as i am running a 206 with a GTI6 motor at 377 bhp per ton and its mental (will be up to 437 bhp per ton next year if i dare) but for a low boost conversion you should be able to do for 3 k if you keep your eyes open for bargains on the for sale section.

have to agree about getting the suspension and brake set up first though....

Guys, Thanks all for your considered replies.

Whilst I can see that 250bhp for £3k or 400+bhp for £7K would be a hoot, I am a little more financially limited than some of you.

I had given myself a £1K budget to achieve 200bhp or more.

As some of you already know, I have installed a V6 D8 conversion which has given me a fair amount more 'fun factor' for under the £1K. Admittedly I haven't dyno'd it and don't expect more than 195bhp & 199lb ft as it stands.

The extra 20% bhp and 40% torque have again raised a smile to my face and that's enough for now.

I still have my complete 70,000 mile '6 engine sitting on a pallet in my warehouse and may/may not sell it or tune it in future. If you are interested in it complete please PM me.

Although I doubt it will ever happen, I would love to do this if funds allow in the coming year(s)....

What do you think?

If you cant afford to supercharge a 6 engine you have no hope of being able to afford a DP turbo kit for your v6. Think on top of buying that kit of DP your going to need an ecu, then need it mapped theres an extra £700-1000 then a custom exhaust to suit it ect...

But surely every man is allowed a little 'dream mod' isn't he ?

Be interesting to find out just how much it would cost..... what if it was under £3k including ECU ?

Hmmm ?
