Cry

Oh woe is me. Dropped the beast of at the garage on Friday, popped in this morning to find out if it was all sorted to be told that they think the head gasket is gone.

I was so hopeful of it simply being a thermostat issue.

What are your experiences with head gasket failures?!

Yeah, they do occur but generally only if the engine has been let to go into red on the temp gauge. Did you find that the coolant in the rad was still heavily pressurised after the car had say stood still for a couple of days? If so, that's a classic sign of HG problems.

One thing to note, unfortunately with the extra pressure in the system from the HG failing, a lot of the time it tends to attack the heater matrix and people find that once the HG has been fixed, very shortly after the heater matrix needs replacing which isn't fun.

I've had head gasket troubles in the past, you'd need to get the cylinder head skimmed and pressure tested before replacing the gasket and torquing it back down.
It's alright to do if you have the right tools but if you're not proficient in mechanics, leave it for someone else to do.

So im lucky mine was a snapper at 60k and got 16 new valves, guides etc from a Peugeot stealer so the gasket is only half the age of the carLOL

I know the moment mine goes, that's my cue to drop a new lump in, tear this one apart and rebuild it with forged internals. Make it stronger and better than it already is.

Mine's the same. Snapper in 2005 at 55K and Peugeot dealer rebuilt engine with 16 new valves under warranty, plus new heater matrix. Probably around that time the revised cambelt change interval was published.

Sorry to hear about the OP's woes.

Very cool cars in the link in your sig BTW.

The quote has landed £1000. F&#k.

How much would it cost to get a new engine? How easy would it be to swap?

engine about £200, but it's then either hoping that engine's had a recent HG or is in good running order, or do the HG yourself on the current one. it won't cost anywhere near that if you do it yourself

    The quote reads as follows:

    Labour 10hrs = £540

    Parts:

    1 headset = £89

    1 timing belt kit = £82

    1 set head bolts = £23

Oil filter, anti freeze, clips etc = £40

Plus; specialist inspection vac/pressure testing and resurface = £100

Including VAT brings it to £1050.

So who's Stan? I'd love to have a go at it myself with some (a lot) of help but at most all I've done before is change a battery and air filter!

Their hourly rate is reasonable @ £54 but I wouldn't have thought it would take 10 hours!

Awaits the usual suspects to come and say its an hour and a half with fag breaks LOL

    LOL

I've used this garage for a number of years and always found their prices to be very fair.

I'm not sure if I was expecting 10hrs of labour though!
