Will be keeping an eye on this. Ive had a starting issue for around 2 years now. Sometimes it just wont fire on the first turn. Sometimes it does. When it doesn't fire first time it doesn't matter how long you turn it over it will never fire. Only when you stop cranking and try again will you have a chance of starting. Sometimes its like it will never fire even after 5 attempts then all off a sudden just starts. Doesnt matter if it's hot or cold either. Extremely annoying because its usually when someone is watching you pull away the thing wont start.

Double check the cam sensor is plugged in. Yes

if i unlocked my 6 and got in straight away and turned the key, it wouldn't fire whatever or however many times i tried. if i stopped and took key out, put it back in, it'd work first time. i put it down to a delay in the immobiliser disarming. i would then just unlock it and wait 5 seconds before putting key in, and it'd start as normal every single time

come to think of it, my 406 v6 coupe did the exact same thing

It is quite easy on these to think you've put the manifold on properly but still have a big gap at the bottom. I'd loosen it back off and check it is flush with the head underneath.

I guess you are sure there is plenty of fuel in the car?

I always leave mine until the mileage appears on the dashboard, instead of the service interval. This way, the fuel pump has had long enough to prime and I find it always starts. Having said that though, mine is now on aftermarket management, but still acts the same as when I was using Peugeot management. Yes

Interesting. As it happens I've experimented with different procedures for starting and have seen some improvement at times only for it to return back to being a pain. For example ive tried turning the key to second click and waiting etc like stan was saying and also turning to second click back to first then to second and attempt a start. All without success.

It is irritating more than anything. I take good care of her and when it fails to start first time if you have a passenger or onlookers I can imagine them thinking to themselves 'perhaps he should get it serviced'!

Whatever. The main thing is, ok doesn't fire on first turn every time but hey shes never let me down in 7 years of ownership. I have to remind myself now and then but would be great to find out whats causing it.

Ill check that its on properly when I get home, but I'm sure it is. Definately quarter of a tank in her. Really confused as to why its happening. Don't think it has an imobiliser as it was originally a 1.8xs so ecu was unlocked. Really starting to be a pain as I need the car for Monday and hopefully FCS. Cam sensor is definitely plugged in.

Any way I can test the ecu? Seems to be only other answer as everything else seems fine, a known working map sensor made no difference at all.

So, we are sure it's *definitely* sparking? If so, you haven't fitted that manifold flush as if there is fuel and ignition, it will start.

Well last night when I removed all spark plugs one by one and out them against the head they would all spark so I'm guessing that they are fine. Doesn't even attempt to start now. Manifold looks like its flush, doesn't seem to be a gap between it and the head.

Come to think of it the spark plugs only seemed to be firing every like second or 2, even at turning over speed shouldn't it spark quicker?

Not always, cranking speed is around 200rpm and not every cylinder fires on each crank. The firing order for these engines is 1-3-4-2, with 1 and 4 stroking at the same time and 2 and 3 stroking at the same time. Yes

Worth taking them all out at the same time and seeing if they all spark like that rather than one at a time?

Right, checked all plugs again, pulled ecu one off and replaced. Turned car over and it started to fire better than last few times. So kept the starter going for 30odd seconds and it started but ran like s**t. Kept the revs at 3k for a few minutes and now she's running fine? Been sat outside the house idling for 15 mins without cutting out. Seriously confused now

Sounds like it could have been flooded with fuel?

Either way, keep us updated. Thumbs up

Exactly what mine did when it had crap in the manifold ie shot ? You managed to clear it from the engine like I did then it runs fine - like mine did

I'm pretty sure that's the problem - but hey what would I know after owning over 20 Gti/rallyes

You're suggesting it won't fire if it's expecting specs of grit to pass through?

I'm suggesting if you fill it with shot it won't fire as no compression ?

I would suggest that on the age of these cars , the sensors and sensor connectors will have some corrosion , disturb them just a little and then intermittent connection , has to be worth pulling them apart and cleaning the contacts
