I know you've mentioned no diesel, but is there a reason for it? 330D mapped @ 290 odd will be quicker than the 330 I think, obviously much better on fuel too.

It's nice getting silly miles from a tank whilst having decent performance too!

335d is quicker still, but I hear the mpg suffers, 330d is a nice balance IMO.

Well on the derv side of things there was a massive problem with the swirl flaps snapping off and f**king engines up but id have guessed that BMW have fixed this problem now.

I know We have had quite a few E39 E60 & E46's in the garage to have the swirl flaps removed other than that i cant see any reason to keep away from a diesel

My father has a e39 530d And has decat and remap its like s**t off a stick & still pulls high 30's round the doors and a bout 45 on a good run

Again manual is something i would go for personally as bmw auto boxes are known for failing and its a bout 2k to get one reconditioned and fitted if your not brave enough to tackle the job

I have to admit I would only get a diesel BMW now. The 320d I had that failed (long story) went really quick when you booted it. That was 150bhp in an E46 so the newer ones are over 170bhp I think?

I only do 8-9k miles a year and lots of short journeys so derv wouldn't be suitable. DPF's issues abound I would imagine.

I have the 123d coupe M sport and it is nuts, so much torque and does over 50MPG.

I must admit if I was to buy one (mine is a company car) I wouldn't get the M sport version the ride is just so hard and harsh, but it is fun to drive quick.

177, remap = 220 - 230, not a bad compromise for 50+mpg on a run and average around 45Mpg+ short journeys etc.

IMO petrol BMWs are pointless these days, the dervs are quicker with day to day driving, better on fuel, and potential there with a map for more power when you get bored.

335i M Sport Manual Touring 2007 twin turbo model (identical engine to 1M). Much better handling than the diesel and quicker too despite what the figures say. Amazing grip and balance in the wet. Done 60k in mine so far and it's the best car I've owned.

Why do you need to do mega mileage to justify a diesel?

the fuel costs more, they cost more to buy, they cost more to service.

plus petrols do very good MPG these days and are rapidly catching up with the performance of diesels, therefore you need to do a fair few miles for the extra MPG you get from the diesel to make it worthwhile buying one.

I would agree with that if you're buying a new or nearly new car then that makes sense but not for a used car.

Still applies to used ones tbh, as they still cost more.

Well if I have a budget of say £5k then regardless of it being a diesel or petrol, ill still have spent £5k so no it doesn't apply. When I had the 320d, the fuel cost may have been more but the 30% increase in fuel economy more than blew that away. Also the service cost was the same regardless of what fuel it used and less insurance and tax just meant it was win win.

Diesels are in such an abundance these days that they're cheap to buy.
