I got an advisory on my hand brake last time,
Was told that this wasnt due to bad maintenance but because
It was a poor design at the side of the cars of today
Does this mean our cars can be failed on older designs
And do we need to think about upgrading the handbrake somehow?

The handbrakes on these cars aren't particularly bad.

If yours is, then it's most likely either the cables or calipers at fault. Yes

You used it on a 1 in 5 without leaving it in gear?

The handbrakes are notoriously bad, mine failed once and needed a new caliper, because the mech inside gets gummed up and horrible.

There's only so long we can keep a supply of second-hand calipers going on here before we have to start refurbing them properly to pass MOTs Yes

I don't find them too bad.

There are better handbrakes out there that's for sure, but to be honest they only have to give 16% braking force to pass the test, which isn't a lot. If you keep the system in good order, no reason why they shouldn't pass.

Stan you're really going to have to stop making it so easy to make jokes about your car sitting motionless in your garage, I'm getting bored with making them but I feel it needs to be done.

Yeah,.. 16% at the moment!

If the cars of today have better handbraking systems then how long
Till that % goes up? And our cars become failures?

Ill look into refurbing the rears this year
Just to see? I did the fronts 2 year ago but they were fine anyway
Just my paranoia kicking in LOL

What are our options for a better handbraking system?

To be honest I'm not sure it's something they could change, although pre-1960 cars are now MOT-exempt, there must be hundreds of thousands of cars out there built after 1961 with worse handbrakes, I can't imagine many 306s will still be running by the time they changed it, if they ever did.

The problem is that good parts for 306s will become harder to find, I myself have two rear calipers in the garage which are fine for braking but MOT failures on the handbrake.

I know what your saying Owain Smile

But if indeed they are trying to get 10+ year old cars off the roads
It'll get worse for us before it gets better,..
Maybe someone should do a tut on rear caliper building
Or divvies a better way of making them work!

We face a tough time ahead if us guys! Sad

At this rate we'll be

LOL

I'm sure we'll be fine, I could get my spare calipers legal again with not too much bother, they just need stripping down, regreasing and put back together, but when you can buy a known working pair for £20 it's just not worth it.

Looking forward to the new forum.

Well to be honest, not really. You could do everything you just listed to the car for less than a lot of modern cars cost to service.

I've rebuilt the front end of mine after a cat C write-off for somwhere between £150-200 for bits from other forum members.

Well duh. Why would peugeot spend more money, speccing a handbrake to be able to keep something way bigger and heavier than a 306 still when its only ever going to need to hold a 306?

Okay, so more modern, bigger, heavier cars have stronger handbrakes? No s**t sherlock. I'm sure HGVs have bigger brakes as well. LOL

Sounds like needless nitpicking really.

LOL

You say that, but when I refer to a topic around the car I am of course referring to when it was in use last not it's current state. Although, a week today it'll be moving again so soon I will be able to feel what the handbrake is like once more. Laugh

Very good, the last time I drove my car was when I returned from Monaco in it. That was 21st September 2011. Ever since then it hasn't left the garage or been started until very recently...

as well as owning a 306 i am also a M.O.T tester most of the time the reason peugeot with rear discs fail the handbrake test is because they dont do alot of braking only 30% i think so the discs corrode up and the pads become glazed up and shiny. Also VOSA are always changing the M.O.T rules we have nothing to worry about apart from 306 air bag lights being on wich is now a fail, the other new stuff is like checking tow bar electrics, main beam light on the dash, Tyre pressure waring lights, esp warning light and some other stupid stuff, all the advisories still apply as before so the 306 gti has still got many years left in it yet.

I don't understand what all the fuss is all about really. There are lots of people on this forum who have taken their cars off the road and laid them up for months on end whilst they carry out required works or upgrades etc, why the sudden fuss about the fact mine is going to be back on the road again soon, whereas when anybody else takes a car off the road for a year no-one bats an eyelid. Dunno

Calm it Stan, let's not get into this again.

I am a nob.
Jim is called Dave, and you have to ask him his best price
Rikky loves wearing heels
Soulman is a mentalist
Your car never moves from your garage

We all have our place, these are but a few examples. There is no fuss.

It's got nothing to do with calming it, I just don't understand why people are *so* interested in my car and what it's current state is. Dunno

It's my property, I can do with it what I like and if I chose to rest it up for a period of time that's my decision. The bit I can't get my head around Owain is that a lot of people do things just like this and yet it's only me and what I'm doing people are interested in. Why?

That's all I want to know. Thumbs up

Lots of people are nobs, I don't see anyone else getting called it on a regular basis. I like it, I find it affectionate.

Everyone has a "thing", yours can be the "car in the garage" thing or the crazed right-wing Nazi thing. I'm happy to go with either, just thought the car thing was less likely to offend.

Stop taking things so personally, it's a car forum. Clearly no-one actually cares if you drive your car or not, do what you like with it and stop worrying about what other people think.

This makes perfect sense now, I didn't realise it was just a 'thing'.

Centrally heated car museum you say? Hmm

    I rather like that. Laugh
