I stumbled across this earlier:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1995-M-Reg-Peugeot-306-2-0-XSi-3-door-in-Diablo-Red-One-owner-only-37000-miles-/320956357981?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item4aba7d5d5d

I've got no connection to the seller, I just thought that this was an interesting find!

I used to have one of those, loved it. I still wouldn't pay that much for it though.

If that was a phase 1 '6' it would be worth soooo much more. Nice example, but even then an XSi isn't really worth much these days even if they are "mint". Sad

How do the values compare across phases for sixes?

I know it's extremely difficult to tell as there are never all that many gti-6s for sale at any one time making it difficult to gauge a market value and the prices can vary anywhere between extremely reasonable and extremely ridiculous.

Is a good phase 1 a rarity that commands a high price? Or is it simply too difficult to tell?

I'd say a very good condition phase 1, such as the one above (but in GTi-6 form) would be worth a fair amount.
That said, a late phase 3 low mile minter would also fetch good money. Yes

I guess at this present moment in time, it's the Phase 2's which are suffering on value, even if they're in decent condition. Sad
