As they are solid centre rivets drilling or pulling them with pliers seems to be very difficult. Is there a better technique to get the rivets out entirely?

I've drilled out the bottom rivets on the bottom of the LH sill. Problem is, as Coskev said in his thread, that the outer but is alloy and the drill bit goes off centre, even though I centre punched each one. So I pulled the alloy outer off each one with pliers, thinking that one I got the skirt away from the rivets, I'd be able to have more grip to pull them out with pliers or something. When this failed I tried drilling the remains out with a smaller bit, but the rivet metal is hard and the drill doesn't penetrate very well. As they are solid centre rivets drilling or pulling them with pliers seems to be very difficult. Is there a better technique to get the rivets out entirely? ________________________________________ Cherry Rallye SOLD |

I ended up knocking some of them into the sill Plenty of cavity wax in there so they won't rattle around! ________________________________________ Red GTB1756 powered Fabia VRS daily driver,LBSC Gti6 eater........Mac1 ZR R1 kit car build in progress. |

I jammed a little punch under the river to stop it spinning and drilled the head off which kept the bottom part of the rivet still. I did cut a couple of the heads off with sharp side cutters ________________________________________ 306 rallye reproduction decals (full sets/individual decals) | 306 b-pillar textured vinyl weatherstrips306 slam panel esso stickers | 306 yellow / orange / pension fund red side door badges gti6 inlet manifold badges | 306 rear boot badges (p2/p3) winner of Extraction of toys from prams with outstanding vigour award 2009 [source: gti6 owners club] |

Carl Screwdriver and hammer to force the rivet edge upwards then pinch off so you can manipulate over the reminent of the rivet is how I've done them on breakers but it's a ball ache so normally leave them on as they rarely sell when collection only offered and have had 10 years of use so are s**t anyway. Rip the f**kers off and use loads of tiger seal to put them back on FTW. ________________________________________ Black X Reg PIII.VGTi 6 A4212 pt 1 A4212 pt 2 Searching the streets of Bristol for 1.36p/day.Joint Kent Leader |

I was wondering whether I'd overlooked a simple way to sort it, but based on all your comments, it seems not. Getting the skirt off is not too much of a drama, its the dealing with the ****ing rivets sticking out of the sills afterwards. I think bits of most of them are going to end up inside the sill. I'll probably do a Coskev and let the cavity wax prevent a noise happening like jingling change in a pocket every time I go over a bump. ________________________________________ Cherry Rallye SOLD |

^^^ This. I actually used a broken hacksaw blade. Worked okay but a dremel would have been the favorite. ________________________________________ See the sheer power and might of the lesser known burrowing owl. |

Hole saw a one inch hole in the sill and use compressed air to blow the rivit debris out of the hole. Paint/treat the edges if the hole you made and slap in a grommet. Job done.________________________________________ R H Davey Welding Supplies. I sell new and used welding equipment in the Hampshire area. i usually attach the car to a jig outside in the road and turn it upside down, but drill multiple holes in the sill first, and wiggle the car around a few times and the rivets drop out usually________________________________________ 306 rallye reproduction decals (full sets/individual decals) | 306 b-pillar textured vinyl weatherstrips306 slam panel esso stickers | 306 yellow / orange / pension fund red side door badges gti6 inlet manifold badges | 306 rear boot badges (p2/p3) winner of Extraction of toys from prams with outstanding vigour award 2009 [source: gti6 owners club] |

Do you engrave numbers on to the rivets before hand and call the numbers as they drop out to passing pensioners?________________________________________ |
