Afternoon chaps

I am hoping someone could offer me advice - I noticed a weird grinding noise coming from the o/s of the 306 when cornering at low speeds, I thought it was something to do with the suspension ... so put it into the local garage who have told me the that its the diff thats knackered. Unsure

Has anyone had any experience of getting this sorted? Is it a complete new gearbox etc .. I had a GTI6 converstion done about 2 years back by CG cars and decided to keep the 5 speed gearbox.

The garage reckoned (at a guess) as they wouldn't do the work themselves i'd be looking at £500-600 quid to get it sorted? Sad

Any help or advice greatly appreciated.

not sure about the noise but sounds like it would be cheaper to replace whole gearbox with second hand gearbox

that is if its definitely the gearbox making the noise

Cheers for the reply Russbez / Jonnie ..

He seemed pretty certain that it was the diff that was making the noise (myself and the mechanic went for a spin in the car a week ago when i first noticed it, and he said at the time he thought it sounded like the diff) so I booked it in for this morning for him to have a better look .. he said he went for another drive in it today with the other mechanic .. who came back with the same conclusion that it was the diff .. I did notice a kinda 'whirling sound' coming from the car few months ago and thought it could have been a loose bearing or something on the gearbox .. so it would make sense that i'm now finding trouble with the diff .. Dunno

The car is a 2000 plate but had the full GTI6 converstion about 2 years ago .. keeping the old 5 speed gearbox (for some strange reason) .. Guess on the plus side I now have a good excuse to get the 6 speed in Smile

Saying that money is gona be tight at this time of year .. and it sounds like this could be quite expensive all in to sort out. Sad

Cheers Dan .. the mechanic did suggest that I effectively 'run' it into the ground (as a cheaper option) Crazy

Don't think i could do it tho .. it would break my heart .. so looking at getting it sorted ..

save up and do the clutch too if its not been done for a while

hah to be fair id just run it till it breaks Smile

not handy if you use your car on regular basis though i guess

Definately don't pay £5-6 hundred quid. Wait till it dies, pick up a 2nd hand box(£60 ish i would guess) and just swap the whole thing.

Brilliant thanks for the advice lads .. the way the finances are at the minute i have no optio. but to run it til it dies.

How much do gear boxes and clutches go for? I'm thinking prob best to try and source the parts just now so i'm good to go when it packs in.

I've got dreams of gettin this supercharged so i was a bit p**sed when the garage told me it wasn't worth spending the money on it.

Yeap that's the thing ... I''m keeping til it gets supercharged so that tells me how much its worth *to me anyway* .. just didnt like the attitude of the guy he could be so dismissive of getting the work done to sort it.

I'm gona take to another couple of garages and get some second opinions ...

What does the 'diff.' actually do tho? is it something thats inside the gearbox?.. does it attach to the beam or something hence why i'm getting a grinding noise? (sorry if i'm being thick)

garage's generally come out with s**t from time to time.
Some people dont under stand keeping a car because you like it and for example wouldnt pay the 400 pound required to pass an mot when they can just scrap it and buy another car (in unknown condition)

Yep, it's down to personal preference.

A lot of people out there just use a car to get from A to B so if the repairs outweigh the cost of buying another they won't think twice.

IMO though this is very often false economy.
When we are talking about 10 year old run abouts i've known a few people to dump them after running well for a number of years just due to a decent sized mot bill (maybe 400 pounds) Which is often brakes and tyres for some and things that imo you expect to pay for in any car such as the odd brake line here and there or a suspension component.

they then sell said car for peanuts buy another 1000 pound car for a run about and it epic fails a month down the line becuase it wasnt treated well before hand.
Basically I would always opt for shelling 400 quid into a long known car rather than giving it up for any old shed you know **** all about.
A few of my mates have fallen into this trap Smile

Its mainly because the average person has no understanding of the fact that cars will always need bits replaced of a certain kind, that doesnt always make them unreliable or rubbish Smile

To be honest I've had 2 diffs go in the past and both have gone very soon after making any nasty noises, by the fact yours is still driving that suggests to me they have mis diagnosed the problem.

Obviously thats no definite answer but I would certainly drive it and see how the problem develops rather than spend out on something that may not fix it.

Maybe it's the intermediate bearing on the o/s driveshaft which is gone...

you sure its not a driveshaft, if it was the diff it would get louder the faster you go, the faqct it happens when your turning at low speeds suggest to me it could be a cv joint or what stan says above, although that would get worse as the speed goes up i imagine.
what noise is it like, does it click loudly eg?

Diffs are quite good on these if the Sun and Planet gears don't explode, The bearings last over 250k with ease, But to swap the box is a 4 hour job for ref
