I'm trying to improve the sound in my '6 and I'm looking to get some new speakers but don't really know much about car audio.

The head unit is a Sony GT550ui - http://www.sony.co.uk/support/en/product/CDX-GT550UI
My mrs has kindly just bought me a very small under the seat sub (want to be able to drop the seats and throw 2 mountain bikes in the back so no daft subs. - http://www.caraudiocentre.co.uk/reviews_m-kenwood-ksc-sw01_p-25624.htm

So, speakers. I was about to buy some Alpine SXE1725s but thought I'd just get a few opinions and maybe see what options are available if I wanted to spend a little more.

I don't want to spend a fortune. £100 for all 4 max really. Also, I want them to fit in the standard speaker holes.

Thoughts?

Fair enough. They're only £60 a pair as well which is pretty good. Hopefully they'll work well with the wee sub under the seat (which might feel nice too as a bonus Wink).

I'll have to keep looking. Their website only lists tweeters in the type-s category - http://www.alpine.co.uk/p/Products/speakers15

But saying that I spotted some on google images that looked bigger and had an 's' on them. Wonder if they're discontinued.

I'm in pretty much the same boat as the OP when it comes to audio equipment.

Can some kind soul please point me in the direction of some good quality Alpine speakers for both the doors and the rear shelf? I have a stealth shelf. They must fit in both shelf and doors with no mods and be a noticeable upgrade to the standard ones, also I want them to be Alpine. I've had a look on their website but don't really know which ones are best. Cost isn't a problem, thanks for the help. Smile

Buy sebs setup? Far better than the alpine kit.

Doesn't it go E the s**t ones, S and then R being the 'better' ones?

A friends dad used to be a vehicle audio dealer years ago and I am sure he once rattled off a lot of info about which to go for - but I paid about as much attention as the wife did when I explained to her the tensioner differences over 136 and 137t cambelt kits.

I got the alpine stuff. I run type s in the front, type r on the back shelf and 4 tweeters plus an alpine amp and type r 10" sub through an all singing all dancing alpine stereo. Sounds the nuts when it's set right. Smile
Must get Gary to set it up again since my battery went flat. Smile

Reviews of the sub seemed positive from what I read. Obviously it's not going to shake the panels...but that's not what I'm really after! Won't be able to report back 'til after Christmas though as it's a pressie but will try to remember to write something up.

At the minute it's way too tinny and just needs something low down so hopefully it'll fit the bill. I wonder if I'll be able to hear it over the exhaust at 70mph.

That's fine, but really I only want to upgrade the speakers. I already have a nice Alpine head unit which I'm happy with. Yes

Aaron, when you fitted the speakers in the doors and shelf were they a direct fit? Dunno

To be honest I don't know what all the fuss is about when it comes to fitting speakers in the doors. If you buy a reasonable set of components they will come with parts to aid fitting. If you look at my Alpines below you will see a plastic ring fitted behind the speaker which was in the box. I think IIRC I slightly enlarged the top and bottom of the metal skin so the basket of the woofer wouldn't foul, then fabricated a piece of thick plastic to 'step back' the window runner to make enough depth for the magnet.

Really was quite simple. It all hides behind the standard grill as well you wouldn't even know they've been played with.

Darkgti6 - I see what you're saying, I don't mind having to make "slight" mods, but would rather they were a direct fit bar obviously the electrical connections.

So, can anyone offer me a link of some that will fit and sound much better than standard?

Matt fitted the door speakers. They looks tad to big the covers just fit. Type shelf is Gary's old one which he modified and wired up. I'll take some pictures later and bug them up. Wink

I had some larger speakers fitted in my doors & they didn't
Sound as good as I expected, I looked at the holes in the std grille & they looked a tad small so I spent an hour with a manual hand drill & opened them all up slightly, the difference in sound quality & reduced door card resonance was amazingYes

    Cool
