Hi all,
I have a new problem with my car, I was in traffic in london yesterday and since then the engine in my 6 is making a loud noise as if it's an aeroplane, the car starts fine and after running for a minute and a
whining noise starts, and is reving at 10. Not sure what the problem could be, any ideas?

Possibly a whining coming from a duff bearing, maybe on the aux belt circuit or the cambelt circuit. Either way I'd get it looked at pronto.
You can determine roughly where it's coming from by opening the bonnet and listening. If it's coming from the belt area, take the aux belt off and then run the engine and see if the noise has gone away. If it has then investigate what on that belt circuit is worn. If the noise doesn't go away then you have a suspect issue on the cambelt circuit and I would suggest having a garage look at it ASAP. Yes Thumbs up

Good advice Stan Wink. Very rare to be anything in he cambelt side but could be from the water pump as I've had this before where the bearings have collapsed and the pully on the wp has moved inwards grating against the casing Sad. Fortunately I found it before the pump jammed as it would have snapped the cam belt.

You can eliminate the power steering pump if it doesn't get louder when you turn the wheel when the car is stationery with the engine running. As Stan said if you remove the aux belt and the noise is gone individually spin all the pulleys and pumps. He one that makes a horrible whiring noise or is difficult to turn is the culprit.
Have had a few tensioner pulleys fail.
I also have a vertually brand new idler pulley sat at work if it turns out you need one (genuine pug) I replaced mine just before I went supercharged which made it redundant.

What's a coolpack? Does it work like aircon?
Do you have to keep it in the freezer between driving times?

Well done for taking the initiative to get it looked at pronto. Thumbs up

I suspect it is a bearing on it's way out, let's just hope it lasts til you get to the garage. Yes

I've got my car back from diagnostic now, the garage reckons that it's an ecu problem, as the dash isn't matching up and the fans are constantly on along with a load of other problems. The garage said it would cost alot and said that the ecu would probably have to be sent off to get re mapped and wouldnt be cheap. Just woundered if an unlocked ecu would be a step in the right direction, failing that I would probably by a phase 3 gti6 and break my current one for parts. Has anyone got and unlocked ecu for sale and would it effect the immobiliser?

Hold on... you can't read Razz

In the post above yours the OP says that his fans are always on causing a whirring noise.

It could be relay/sensor related mate very unlikely to be a ECU problem

Agreed, the ECU won't need a re-map, it will most likely be a relay or sensor on that circuit.

I would get a second opinion in your position. Yes

Hope you get it sorted mate, just goes to show how good it is to have people dotted about that know these cars inside out or you could get charged a kings ransom for work not needed......

Sounds like a generic garage your using, can you ask them for a full breakdown of the breakdown ( See what I did there?!? ) and post it up here for the real experts to cast their eyes over before you commit to anything.......

The problem is these cars are getting on a bit now, and therefore looms, plugs and connections will be possibly corroding and causing all sorts of faults. Sad

As said, the best thing to do is to make sure the brown sensor is plugged in properly and then after that look at other parts of the fan setup loom/connections and make sure they are all clean and free of water or corrosion. Thumbs up

my car has been out of action for a couple of days now and has been resting in the garage, I had a rumage around in my shed and found a spare fan unit which luckily had the relays still inside the triangle box. I have removed them and will fitted them to my 6 on saturday. I have also bought an unlocked ecu of ebay for £20 and will hopefully arrive soon. I have read that in order to remove my current ECU without locking it the ignition needs to be in the run position, does it need to remain in this position when fitting the replacement unlocked ECU? If some who has knowledge in this field give me a step by step as I dont want to mess it up. cheers for all the help so farThumbs up

You will need the ignition on the 2nd click if you wish to to unlock your current ECU and keep it in that state, yes. Yes

When you fit the new ECU, you can have the ignition switched off as the new ECU is already unlocked as you say.

depends how it as unlocked, it would be wise to unplug the transponder unit incase it was a "simple" unlock, as it could well go into a locked state.
