f**king car! (I'm ready to kill it)

After dumping £200 on a service on Friday, my car's heater matrix has decided to kick the bucket (I think?)

This morning I turned on heaters, and the windscreen started misting up? The heater didn't do anything to clear it, plus there is now a trickle of mucky water (sweet to the taste) in my passenger footwell. So is my heater matrix buggered?

When I stopped the car, there is coolant p**sing from the front of the car from the radiator area all over my driveway - is this part of the same problem?

Is there anything I can do immediately (today) to put a halt to it (read something about a bypass?).

I just don't have the money to fix it if it's a dash out job?, This on top of two new front tyres badly needed, and a replacement beam due to levels of dangerous play in my current one has just turned this car into a MONEY PIT over the weekend!!!Thumbs down

How tricky is it to take the dash out for someone (or two) with not a huge amount of experience, but some enthusiasm?Dunno

Dave

No not that I noticed.

Would hope rad would be okay, (its only a few years old Nissens) could it just be an airlock overflowing out the top? (wishfull thinking?)

I can see there is a guide/faq but to be honest I don't find it much help being just a massive list.

Well that's not going to happen today.

Am i safe to continue driving it, or do i at the very least need to bypass the thing?

Nevermind, found the sizes needed.

MEANWHILE

I've just tried to open the radiator filler cap and coolant has come rushing out the top (pressurised?)

The car has been sitting prior to this for an hour or so (after a 40 minute drive)

What's happening there then?

Thanks for the help
Dave

k-seal... always people saying it wont work, will clog up the matrix. I've personally never seen it. I have seen a clogged rad from radweld, but never seen a problem with K-seal

Could this have anything to do with being serviced on Friday? I've done precisely 100 miles?

Surely not, they would have just poured a litre of coolant in. (Overfilled maybe, and couldn't leave through the overfill?) (I'm not starting a witch hunt, I just have no idea how this thing works?)

In which case:

The the coolant in the radiator was pressurised, and this has popped my Heater matrix!?

Leading to suggest the gasket may be on its way out? So what are my next steps?

Dave

i would say head gasket pressurised the stystem and blew matrix, run the car and leave it over night, if its pressurised in the morn then you have a duff head gasket

Before you decide its the HG, bleed the system properly (which you will have to do anyway when you do the matrix)

Mine was pressurising and blowing coolant out the rad cap which was gutting as it was just after i bought it. tried bleeding several times and couldnt get any air out but on the last attempt got a massive (and i do mean massive...took almost the entire contents of the bottle) air bubble through and its run like a dream since. Was worried i had cooked the gasket as it did get into the red in traffic and i couldnt get any hot air out of the fans or anything like that Sad

I'm glad you all mentioned this, as I've just been out to try and find some hose to bypass the matrix (with no luck).

Anyway we were looking around and thought it was an idea to turn the car on and see what was what (listen out for any miss firing form cold etc).

Started the car and all seems normal, no miss firing (a little bit of 'plinking' but I think that was the exhaust manifold or heat shield heating up).

Inside the car the blowers were on full but NO sign of condensation appearing on the windscreen and there was no sign of any further fluid leaking into the car (save what was there this morning), I took a (useless?) video:

So we risked taking it for a 5 min spin and everything seemed normal, the heaters were working and temperatures seemed normal.

Is it possible that the rad coolant was overfilled, this lead to a lot of pressure building up and caused it to find a way out through path of least resistance, squeezing through the connecting pipes to the matrix, or the bursting the matrix itself?

Rather stupidly (me not being a mechanic, or very smart), decided after the drive to open the rad cap and see what's what, and of course it gushed out under pressure all over the driveway Dry

I'm going to do what jonnie205 suggested, run the car and leave over night - can I just have it sitting running for 10 mins and the drive to do this and pressurise properly, or shall I take it for another quick drive around the block.

Also could someone explain to me what this means if the HG is going?

(I'd have thought it it failed, there wouldn't be a tight seal anymore, and therefore wouldn't be able to keep pressure, but we're saying if it stays pressurised, then = HG failure Dunno )

I guess, I shouldn't continue driving it then if this is the case? So what can be done?

I think I'll attempt Niall suggestion and thoroughly bleed it too ...

Another thing, if youve just run it up to temp, if the thermostat has opened up, see if the top rad pipe is solid/pressurised

I guess it should be solid/pressurised after running up to temp?
And then not pressurised in the morning?

And then I'll open the rad cap and all should be well?
