would the thermostat stuck open affect performance ? and wheres the engine numbers on the 6 llump ? cause theres 2 isnt there the xu10j4r and the xu10j4rs ?

A thermostat stuck open will hamper performance as the engine will be running rich due to it not being up to operating temp. Yes

The engine serial number is located on the front of the block to the right of the oil filter although with the age of these blocks now it is probably unreadable. However, the letters 'J4R' are stamped into the rear of the block, and the thermostat side of the head should have 'RS' cast into it. That's how you know it's an XU10J4RS. Smile

In that case then it will pop a 'flame' every now and then but generally only on systems that are well bedded in. You need to give a brand new system a few months of use to 'soot up' and then the flames will emerge every now and again. Smile

In that case it should 'pop' the odd flame. Yes

Maybe you're not trying hard enough?

I may be wrong but having a 3" exhaust system on a standard engine is going to reduce the back pressure which will effect performance???
Even high boost engines only have 2 1/2" system, only turbo cars run 3" systems usually!

Ok, be interested to see some pics of it. Yes

When you say the backbox is 2.5" do you mean that is the diameter of the tailpipe? If so, that's a tad small.

Small in a bad, detrimental way Stan?

2.5" tailpipe may be a tad small to one persons preferences.

Not saying 3" tailpipes are wrong, but 2.5" isn't exactly small as far as a GTi6's requirements are concerned. Saying it's a tad small could make some feel it's actually a negative in terms of what it should be.

What size is a standard tailpipe?
