So after getting annoyed with my V70 T5 trackshed / company van never, ever boosting I bought a 540M Sport on LPG with a new MOT. Had it looked at on ramps, discovered it was very rotten and had it taken back by its scamming seller. Cue a quick ebay purchase of a 406 D9 V6 coupe manual (always fancied one) for £750 in Polaris Blue, looked fairly straight and I knew I could break it if it was a complete banana.

So its an SE with everything thrown at it, goes very well, certainly better than the 126k miles it has on it would suggest. Satnav, 6xcd changer, cruise, black leather, top spec JBL speakers + amp. It has a few internal electrical issues, hence the PP2000 buy. Aircon doesn't work even though it should, maybe compressor is buggered. Radio does a few random things and the passenger window is a bit dodgy.

Powerflow system (going to remove the rear 2 cats as they aren't monitored)
K&N panel filter
16" 7J TD pro race 1.2s in gloss black with 205/55/16 Michelin Pilot Sport 3s
Radio in and working (replaced to original to fix MUX problems)
MOT (no problems at all - thank god after the BM)
DS2500 in the brembos (thanks russ)
Airbox restriction removed and slight exhaust leak sorted
PP2000 bought and sorting things out - probably the best mod!
Bilstein B4s bought - waiting on delivery from Germany
VSS changed - faulty signal and a common fault
Bonnet and boot stays
Full service, inc gear oil (Total stuff and Peugeot parts)

I bought it as a quick(ish) cruiser that would do over 30mpg and still be a bit fun. I was considering a separate track car, but might try this after the dampers are fitted as its not half bad. Then again if the right GTi6/rallye appears early next year then happy days. There was a Rallye at Twigworth breakers that I was tempted by, but the engine was a bit too noisy for the price. Smile

It seems many of the newer multiplexed vehicles PSA built were better on fuel than their very similar predecessors, Phase 2 xsara vts is noticeably better than the phase 1 and the 306's.

Nope! Wink

36mpg at 75-80mph on the clock, way over 40 if you are doing 55mph
Over the last 450 miles its on 29.7, overall (with a lot of B road booting and town driving) its on 28.5 on normal unleaded.

It has VVT too which helps a lot. Good old Porsche eh?

sounds cool though yours, the jbl speakers and amp are a nice setup, i was suprised at the quality of them in mine Smile

Are there any other (manual) gearbox options for these? They are 5spd yes?

People have fitted 6 speed and there is a quaife LSD available at huge cost.
There is a current project to use the standard LSD from another PSA car, but no idea how far that has progressed.

Mine is a 5 speed manual

Looked briefly on sb earlier, the 407 gearbox is designed for big wheels, 4.7 fd :eek. Standard 406 5speed is 4.0 and 4.3!

I used to think it was a bad idea, but i wouldnt be totally against this in a 306 + a 6speed box
I wonder if the gearbox would be heavier again though :/ . I do like a 406 coupe, The interior looks very comfortable on these too!

Yes
Out of all the various engine upgrades/changes, the V6 appeals to me the most. Balls to the handling and you can shove the weight distribution problem up your arse: I want grunt from tick over. Big grin

It's a blue coupe. Hardly rare!
Anyway just back from a 10 day trip to pamiers in the south of France, 1870 miles with the family. All good and 30mpg against 120kmph on the motorway and a flatout trip up to a ski station. Needs brake fluid urgently, vid to follow.

Felt great cruising, but just too long for the twisty roads. No more modifications now, will do Big grin

Well there isn't much point I think yet - its still looks like a standard blue coupe!

So small update:
Made it a bit quicker with a couple of small breathing mods
ATE superblue dot 4
New front discs
17" Turinis hopefully this weekend coming (if they fit over the brakes)
Needs new 6x9s in the rear as i've blown one of the JBLs. The headunit sounds simply amazing now.
New peugeot top engine mount, completely transformed the car. It changes direction soooo well now.

So i've now done 5.5k miles in this and although it was meant as a stop gap its going to stay. The last car I owned that was this good at flowing down a B road was my rallye in standard spec. Although the front end 'floats' a bit over crests I can carry massive speed and hardly touch the brakes/accelerator. Also no one has a clue about its ability and very little can match it. The throttle response is just awesome, especially now with the breathing mods. This will stay a GT car although it might go on track, basically no coilovers, big brakes or supercharger. Smile
