over the winter i want to track prep my GTi6 so looking at ways to save on weight, air con and abs are first to go

then i thought about the power steering setup, would just fit a non pas rack from a basic model or even just

remove the hydraulic ram from the existing rack

Has anyone ever done this? if so how did you find it?

What is it like at the mo? Personally i wouldnt bother. If i was making a all out track car i probably wouldnt...

Theres so many places i would be looking at first before going that extreme
I would work down from this
Spare wheel (15kg)
Swap cylones for team dynamics alloys or c5 steelies (12-16kg)
Ac system (15kg ish)
Bonnet heat carpet (2kg or more)
Swap seats for buckets (20kg depending on buckets)
Fit kighter calipers and bells (as much as 8kg)
Light weight flywheel and crank pulkey (4.5kg)
Strip interior (lots kg)
At this point you would start thinking about about fibreglass and carbon etc as well as polycarbonate windows
Then sonewhere









Down here that stuff is worth while...... i get removing abs in a track car but still.

right now its a full fat gti6! tbh i prefer not have power assisted steering, ok very heavy for parking etc but

once your on the move the feel is alot better

ive heard people talk about a ph1 xsara rack, whats different about them?

I dunno. Im not sure i would want to drive one without. I wouldnt say mine is lacking feel either. Ive never driven a car that communicates as much through the steering wheel as a gti6. So why bother really?
If its something you really want then do it, but personally if it is for weight loss reasons then theres far better gains to be made.

    Really? I would have thought the rack dumbs it down a bit? As its basically more assisted?
    They do intrigue me though i would just need to drive one first as you say (or a gti6 with the same rack even)

    iirc the vts has less turns lock to lock...welshpug will know!

    Yeah ph1 has 2.4 and the ph2 2.6 iirc

    Phase 2 doesnt fit directly though
    So ph1 is the way to go as its no fuss and less turns anywho

    If I had a 306 in the fleet (the HDi doesn't count) then I'd be buying a VTS rack and the 21mm TBs before anything else.

    I'm popping my VTS rack on the 205. Will take it down from 3.9 turns LOL

    already have 21 mil t/b's to go on once ive rebuilt spare beam, vts rack from ecp is only £130 trade

    I done this- was f**king heavy at first and also when stationary, was great once up to speed and you got used to it.

    The car certainly picked up a fair bit faster once it was all out. I was just running crank to alternator without tensioners or pulleys.

    What would you suggest for track then Meirion? I have 21mm TBs and I think they are fine for track...

    23 or 25 but you need special dampers and the ride will be shocking on the road. 21 is a good compromise though.

    Very true, although I drove it for the last 3 years on track and fast road and found it fine. Yes

    That's what I felt when I was deciding what to go for. They certainly give good road performance and on track they give a good improvement over the 20's so I was happy. Yes
