Most of you won't remember me, as I don't post much.

I had a 306 1.8 as my first car, and then bought an Astra 2.2 coupe (which didn't last very long!). I'd given the 306 to my gf, and after driving it again having driven some other cars, realised what a good car it was. I vaguely remembered there being a 306 GTI, and after a while found a nice clean one, enthusiast owned with the biggest folder of receipts I'd ever seen. 9 months and 10,000 miles later the head gasket goes pop. So I laid the car up and bought a Golf Mk2 instead, less than 1,000 miles later the HG on that has gone (a pattern seems to be developing here).

Anyway, today I'm going to get another 306! Very excited, it needs a couple of bits doing so I'm sure I'll be on here a lot.

What do you think I should do with my old car? I bought it as it had stacks of history, recent belt change, recent service, and... working air con! However it does have a few bits wrong with it, main one being the HG failure. How much is it worth in one piece? Can anyone who's broken one given a rough idea of how much they ended up with (I know it's a lot more effort). Or should I fix it up?

Welcome! Wave

As a complete car at a rough guess about £300-400 unfortunately. Sad
Broken up you could probably make double that...these cars have plummeted in value over the last couple of years, especially when they need extensive repair work. Yes

I agree with this, you could buy the next one and find that needs loads of work and maybe a hg after 10k too.
At least your current 6 is a known commodity and all it does require is HG. Smile
If mine went, I would have it fixed as I know the rest of the car. Smile

I agree with the others - if you want a 6, and you've got the choice of a nice clean one with masses of history but only needing a head gasket, or breaking it (a time-consuming PITA) to get some other random car that is an unknown quantity, I'd say it is much easier and better to get your car fixed.

Then you have a clean, tidy enthusiast-owned 6 with lots of service history - and a new head gasket!

I agree, fix the first one, then fix the golf after when you can an get rid, pull some money back.
What's it feel like to have registered on the site before the car was even designed?

LOL

This is an issue on a few people's accounts...it's down to a coding error somewhere. Owain did attempt to explain it somewhere before I recall. Yes

'Cos I need a car to drive in the meantime unfortunately, and it seems the days of picking up a runaround for £500 are long gone, so another 6 sort of made sense.

Also because it's not a cheap, easy, or quick fix! I'm in two minds whether to break the first one or not - forgot to mention it needs some other bits doing, new windscreen, suspected CV joint, and some other minor bits I can't remember now!

Sad times - definitely won't be selling it in one bit then! True the prices on them are right down, but that's not a bad thing if you want to buy one! Amazing value for what they are.

My parents pre-empted both my birth, and the existence of this amazing car and signed me up early Wink

Anyway, I went and got 306 #2 over the weekend, has a few issues, but overall I'm happy with it (touch wood!)

This is 306 #1 (fortunately no longer buried, but still pretty f*#cked)

Nah, snowplough on a nearby road flicked up loads of stones and one cracked my windscreen. Not too bad at the moment though, doesn't need immediate replacement. My pals windscreen was completely shattered, had to get a new one there, something like 600 euros!
