Does anybody know much about these? I'm not saying I'm after one but I was flicking through P/H's and they seem really cheap and the average mileage on them is really low so I'm guessing epic running costs?

No, just the roulette of getting one that s**ts itself 'cause the previous owner didn't have a clue about rotaries and neglected it.

They have shocking mpg, and fsh is a must from what ive heard.

I dont know what performance is like but i had some fun with an 03 plate one, and the 6 was quicker by a fair bit, put me off them after that lol.

Seems there's 2 models, one being 192 and the other 231 and I would guess the 231 would have faired better against a 6 but who knows Dunno

My mates got one he absolutely loves them, did tell him to be careful and buy a looked after one. He got an 05 plate with 60k for £3800 so a bit of a bargain. I for one don't like the look of it but what do I know as I like '13year old pugs' LOL

So far no problems but then he's only had it 6 months, petrol does seem abit high and gets through about a litre of oil every 1000-2000 miles which could get annoying.

My mates is the 231 version and it definatly feels quicker than a standard 6 but then I haven't been in one of them for a good 3 years.

Sounds nice and matalically too which is different.

Tbh, if they have a coil/lead dead, or just tired plugs, they can be a good 30-40bhp without the owner noticing as they're so smooth. Ignition components are stressed a lot with a rotary.

You have to be wary of the condition of the engine as the rotary engine is basically a triangle spinning in a circle.

The tips of the triangle if driven hard or not well looked after means an engine rebuild which will set you back 3-3.5k

Any power modification will reduce the engines life. High power RX-8 i was told would need rebuilding around 40,000 miles dependant on power out put!

Was looking at getting one but went to a skyline instead!

My mates RX-8 is starting to lose compression so look likes his is on its way out!

a couple of my mates have had them, they are appalling things, problem after problem even when looked after they had, one was a 231 model and was horrifically slow.

~20-24mpg, no matter how you drive 'em.

I.E. - perfect excuse to thrash it everywhere.

There is a full feature about rotary engines in Japanese performance this month. The harder the engine is pushed the better the fuel economy on the rx 7. rx8 is a completely different engine and quite rubbish from what the article says.

They use oil by design, it's not an issue, there's a whole fkload of modern BMW's out there using more by accident....

My mate has one a 192 version 5 speed. Not as quick as my 6 No. But saying that much nicer inside looks good too. Currently he's got a few issues with it, including abit of rough running. Note about it is that you have to drive it far enough to get it to warm up, if u pop to the shops in it and it doesn't it refuses to start afterwards.

One other thing is that the 231 is alto more expensive in terms of some of the parts. My mate had the clutch done in his a Cool 500 quid to replace and fit, you looking at more than double that on the 231 one.

Still like them tho. Thumbs up

How can you tell if they are 192 version or 231 version? Any obvious differences?

Look under the bonnet, 231 has 6 intake ports/runners, 192 has just four.

The revs red line at 7 in the 192 version.

Can you get a 192 version with a 6 speed?

Also look under the headlights, the 231 has pop out headlight washers and the 192 does not and don't think they were an option for the lower power version.

Interiors quite nice as long as you like triangles! LOL
