Car wont start Sad

Just dash lights up, i turn the key to fire it up and it just whines at me and then the needles shoot to the top of the counters then drop.

Can anyone tell me if my battery is dead and time to replace? Or is it something else? Cry

Yes. And I have the jump car on, not sure if it makes a difference.

Edit: unless the jump car is positive earth!
Edit again: Actually, does that still mean pos to pos and neg to neg, even though it's positive earth? It's been years and I've forgotten!

Always have the jump car running, as the voltage will be higher across the battery of that car...Yes

Anything below 12.3v and the battery is on the way out....10.05v is as flat as a pancake for a car battery. Yes

Ok i should be going to pick a new battery up early tomorrow morning.

Just been out in it, drove about 30miles today and now shes parked up outside, i disconnected the battery then locked the doors so in theory it should be fine to start without a jump tomorrow morning?

If it refuses to start ill just get my housemate to jump it again.

What size/capacity battery should we have in these cars? Currently have a halfrauds advanced 470amp battery in there. My housemates 1.9TDI has a 670amp battery though?! Quite a bit bigger....

Halfrauds HDI battery specs -

Type: Calcium
AH Value: 60
Bench Charge: 6.0 Amps
Dimensions (LxDxH): 242x175x190mm
Reserve capacity: 105
Weight (kg): 14.89

Vs Gti6 battery specs-
Guarantee: 4 Years

Type: Calcium
AH Value: 52
Bench Charge: 5.2 Amps

Halfords batteries come down a fair bit in price if you have a trade card.

I went for an Exide Excell from ECP, its a bigger battery than was on there before at 540amps.

Got the online 15% off click and collect at £50. So not too bad.

Seems to be charging fine so I knew it wasn't an altenator issue. New battery reads a healthy 12.60v when car is off

    Cheers for advice all Smile

    Voltage reads 12.8v. Razz

(I'm cheating though, it's on an Optimater in the garage 24/7) LOL
